Hollow Mountain: Grampians Hiking Trail and Travel Guide

By 21 October, 2021Travel Australia, Victoria

The Grampians is home to an extensive range of hiking trails and walking paths, with Hollow Mountain being one of those incredible locations.

Furthermore, there are multiple caves, rocks pools and panoramic views to enjoy while hiking this trail. However, you will need to work hard to reach the final destination, and care must be taken at all times.

Nonetheless, the views are magnificent, and it’s easily one of the best hiking trails in the Grampians region. Not to mention, it’s usually one of the least popular hiking locations, making it one of the best hidden gems.

Finally, bushwalking experience is necessary for this walk. Therefore, do not attempt this hike alone or with little to no hiking skills.

*Please note that this is a strenuous hike. And, you will be required to climb large boulders, walk along the edges of rocks and crawl through small spaces. Therefore, the Hollow Mountain walk is not recommended for children.

How to Get To Hollow Mountain

Hollow Mountain is in the northern area of the Grampians region. And, if you’re travelling from Halls Gap, expect a 35km drive that will take around 30-40 minutes. Though, I recommend taking the A8 Western Highway, as it makes it easy to reach.

Additionally, there are a couple of rough corrugated roads you’ll need to drive on to reach the car park. However, this is only a short part of the trip. Anyway, take it easy on these roads and keep an eye out for large rocks.

Moreover, it’s easily accessible for 2WD and 4WD vehicles. Although, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend big rigs to take this road.

Finally, once you reach the dirt parking area, choose a space and head south to begin your walk. There will be plenty of signage for the hike.

The Hiking Trail

The hiking trail is short, steep and very interactive. And, there will be a couple of times where you will need to crawl through tight spaces. However, this is easily the best hiking trail I’ve ever completed; Also one of the most confusing.

Once you’ve parked your vehicle in the spaces provided, begin the journey south along the trail. Don’t worry, the signage will let you know which path to follow. Enjoy this simple stroll along the dusty paths, as it’s going to be practically all uphill from here.

Once you’ve climbed a few rocks, you’ll arrive at a cliff face. Avoid making the same mistake I did by going to the left. Be sure you climb the boulder to the right; There will be a faint yellow marker to let you know where to go.

Admittedly, the size of this rock will likely leave you in shock. However, use the small holes to put a foot in and take your time to climb the rock. While it is massive, it is doable. Though, I would recommend taking off any heavy backpacks and keeping your hands free at all times.

Afterwards, carefully navigate your way around the boulder, and don’t go too close to the edge, as it’s very high up! Continue to climb the next rockface and crawl through the crevice.

Continue scouring the rocks, and you will soon arrive at an opening. Once you’ve reached the area, there will be an opening on the left side of the rocks; This is the ‘hollow mountain’. Don’t be afraid to wander in and enjoy the views back out to the bushland.

Finally, exit the cave and continue following the markers until you reach the top. Return via the same track, and take your time on the bumpy rock formations.

The Views at the Top of Hollow Mountain

The best thing about visiting this magnificent location is the sheer multitude of views. Not only will you enjoy fascinating views at all stages of the hike, but there are multiple points of interest along the way. Moreover, you’ll find it hard to continuously walk as you’ll want to stop and look around.

Furthermore, take note that the ‘hollow mountain’ feature is set inside a cave. So, after climbing the giant rock and walking around the cliff face, you’ll come upon a large cave opening.

Wander inside and take a seat on the conveniently placed rock and enjoy the view towards the bushland. Moreover, this is easily one of the best views on the hike, and the framing is simply magnificent. Not to mention, it’s a nice spot to hide from the sun for a little while.

Next, continue hiking up the mountain, and you’ll soon reach the highest point; A fantastic spot to view the Grampians region with panoramic views of the area.

Explore the Gulgurn Manja Shelter

While visiting Hollow Mountain, be sure to make use of how close you are to the Gulgurn Manja shelter. Moreover, this Aboriginal art site is a Grade 2 1km return hike. Therefore, it’s relatively easy and a great way to finish up your adventure for the day.

Furthermore, take some time to reflect on the culture and appreciate this significant location. And enjoy the stunning art.

Wrapping Up

In conclusion, the Hollow Mountain walk is easily one of the best in the Grampians region. Considering it’s exceptionally unique, rugged and interactive. Not to mention, walking around the edges of a large boulder sure get your heart pumping.

Nonetheless, it’s easily my favourite hike in the Grampians region, and I think it’s better than the Pinnacle (Yep, I said it!). I love the adventure of climbing the large boulders and crawling through tight spaces. It makes the hike engaging and keeps you on your toes!
