The Grampians Waterfalls

Mackenzie Falls

Discover one of the largest waterfalls in Victoria within the Grampians National Park, Mackenzie Falls. While visiting, explore the other waterfalls and try out the different walking trails.

First off, there are a couple of ways to view Mackenzie falls. Take the Mackenzie Falls Lookout, which is a 0.9km one-way walk. You will be greeted with gorgeous views around the Zumsteins area and an uninterrupted outlook on the waterfall. Also, this path is accessible for wheelchairs and prams.

Alternatively, walk towards Cranages Lookout, then head down to the base of the falls; this trail is roughly 0.9km one way and will give you a magnificent perspective of the Grampians waterfall.

Afterwards, wander along the Mackenzie river walk, which will lead you to Fish Falls (roughly 2km one way). On the way back up to the car park, take a stroll to Broken Falls.

There are toilet facilities available near the car park and picnic tables for a place to enjoy lunch. Be mindful when heading down to the base of the falls, as the stairs are very slippery, narrow and steep. A decent level of fitness is required to tackle the 260 narrow and slippery steps.

Spend a couple of hours enjoying everything this natural wonder has on offer. It usually takes about 25 minutes to travel from Halls Gap to the Mackenzie Falls car park.

Silverband Falls

Silverband Falls is a modest and simplistic waterfall close to Halls Gap. The pleasant cascade is an easily accessible 1.5km return walk from the Silverband car park.

In the 1800s, European Settlers named the peaceful cataract Silverband Falls at which resembles a silver band.

Start your adventure by parking your vehicle, then cruise through the beautiful setting amongst ferns and trees. During the walk, take a peek at the river to witness the flow of the waterfall.

Upon arrival at Silverband Falls, take a moment to examine the base of the waterfall. The water flow strangely disappears into the ground where the rocks are and reemerges shortly down the creek.

On a warm day, enjoy leaning your back against the rock while the water tumbles down over your head and shoulders, a very refreshing experience.

This walk is fantastic for children as it’s short but exciting; they’ll be amazed by the beauty of the waterfall.

Start by parking at Burrong Falls car park and walk down the track; unfortunately, there are no toilet facilities, although there are picnic tables available.

If you plan on getting closer to the falls, it requires some hiking down the last 20m to the base. However, take care while viewing the falls off track.
