There are a handful of awesome things to do in Berat, Albania and you really shouldn’t miss this charming little town! From UNESCO world heritage sites to stunning panoramic views, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

I’ve delved into the top ten things to do in Berat so that you can ensure you make perfect use of your time here.

Let’s skip the small talk and dive into everything you need to know before visiting this fascinating little place.

Is Berat Worth Visiting?

Berat is absolutely worth a visit! There’s a decent amount to see and it’s a lovely place to wander. Besides, if you love learning about history, this place is rich in century old history and fascinating things to explore.

What Is the Best Time of Year to Visit Berat?

I visited during the peak of the summer period in August 2023. And, in all honesty, the heat was absolutely unbearable!

Berat and Gjirokaster are known for being some of the hottest towns in Albania considering they consist of mostly concrete. Moreover, there’s very little tree coverage so this place really heats up!

Therefore, I’d recommend visiting during the shoulder season. Anytime before or after summer is great to enjoy this beautiful town. So, try to consider visiting beginning of June or the end of September.

The sunset views are incredible from the viewing platform!

How Long Do You Need in Berat?

In all honesty, you don’t need too much time in Berat as there isn’t an awful lot to do. So, I’d recommend allowing at least 2 nights to stopover in this town. Therefore, you get 2 half days to explore and one full day.

Plenty of time to explore the beauty of this town!

10 Best Things to Do in Berat

  1. Free Walking Tour

One of the best ways to get around the town and do some exploring is to join in on the free walking tour. There are two tours running daily from 9 AM and 6 PM.

The tour guides’ names are Bruno and Elona and they are fantastic at showing visitors around the city.

For more information, hit the Google link below to find the starting point for the walk and to read up on some of the reviews.

  1. Gorica Bridge

The Gorica Bridge is a beautiful stone bridge to cross and explore both sides of the town. Moreover, this bridge is said to be anywhere from 300-400 years old.

The Bridge stretches out over the Osumi River and is about 130m in length. It’s a lovely spot to visit for sunset and to enjoy views over the river.

Not to mention, this makes up a great lap to take around the town including the next point of interest.

  1. New Bridge of Berat

Continue wandering around the town of Berat and visit this bridge to complete a lovely lap of the town. The new bridge of Berat is a suspension bridge, so it tends to bounce around a little once there are a number of people walking across.

Nonetheless, the bridge looks lovely and is another great way to cross over the Osumi River and offers another beautiful vantage point of the town.

  1. St. Michael’s Church

Perched up and nestled in the hills of Berat is St. Michael’s Church. However, if you want to reach this spot, you’ll need to be ready to conquer some steep hills to visit the attraction.

It’s likely that this church was built in the fourteenth century and now makes up part of Berat’s UNESCO World Heritage sites.

For the most part, this spot isn’t visited by many people so you’re likely to have it all to yourself. And, the view over the town is absolutely incredible! It’s definitely worth the hike, just wear some comfy shoes to make your way to the top.

  1. Berat Castle

Battle the steep hills of Berat to enjoy the magnificent castle of Berat. Not to mention, this is easily one of the best things to do in Berat and I highly recommend visiting this location, despite the steep incline!

This castle dates back to the 13th century and stands at an elevation of around 214 metres. There are loads of houses, churches and mosques within the castle and there is plenty to explore.

When exploring the castle you can follow the different walking routes to explore the defensive wall, acropolis, Southern tower and so much more!

Tip: Visit the castle at sunset for stunning golden-hour views of Berat. Besides, this is also the coolest time of day to visit the castle!

  1. Berat Viewing Platform

At some point in your journey around the castle, you can wander over to the Berat viewing platform for epic views over the town. The Albanian flag will be flying high and the panoramic views over the town and surrounds make the hike up the hill worth every drop of sweat!

Sunset up here is pretty incredible and you can enjoy the beauty of this location before heading back into town.

berat viewing platform
  1. Bulevardi Republika

Wander where the locals flock to every evening for the best place to hang out once the sun goes down. There are bars, restaurants, cafes and outdoor seating spaces.

Moreover, this is a lovely spot to enjoy a sunset beer or to dine while people watching. I recommend taking a stroll along the boulevard before finding a spot to park up.

Wander the Boulevard at dusk

  1. Wine Tasting Tour

One of the most popular activities to enjoy in Berat is the wine-tasting tour. Enjoy a few hours of boozy-filled fun and taste some delicious local wines.

Not to mention, Berat is the biggest wine-producing town of Albania, so you’re sure to taste some of the best in the country!

For more information on the wine tasting tour, check out this link here.

  1. Bogova Waterfall

An hour’s drive southeast will take you to one of the hotspots of Berat. Moreover, this is an excellent way to escape the heat of Berat and dive into the beautiful nature of Albania.

Bogova Waterfall offers strikingly blue water between a rocky canyon. You will visit with a tour guide who will organise transport, lunch and all the sightseeing locations.

For the most part, tours are around 4,500 Albanian Lek, but the price will fluctuate according to season or exchange rates.

  1. Lulishtja

Last but not least, relax in the lovely park of Lulishtja, or enjoy a stroll under the trees. Moreover, this is an excellent spot to escape the heat and enjoy the gorgeous views of the Berat old town.

I recommend bringing some food along or grabbing some takeaway from one of the shops. There’s lots of space to enjoy a seat on the grass or park up along one of the park benches.

Wrapping Up

Berat is a charming little town and is absolutely worth visiting. There are a number of excellent activities and things to do, so it definitely makes this town worth a stopover!

All in all, my favourite attraction was easily the Berat Castle and viewing platform. I simply couldn’t get over the views and it’s definitely the best place to enjoy sunset in town.

Finally, be sure to check out the other posts on my blog for more information regarding travel in Albania. And, check out the other countries I’ve visited while you’re at it.

The post How to Get to Pai: Including Travel Tips appeared first on Ashlee Morgan.

Knowing how to get to Pai can be a little tricky for first-time visitors. Besides, it’s high up in the north of Thailand and very close to the Myanmar border.

Almost all visitors coming to Pai are travelling from Chiang Mai, so that is the travel route on which this blog post is based.

Let’s dive into everything you need to know in regards to travelling to Pai so that you can get on the road ASAP!

Is Pai Worth Visiting?

Pai is an absolute backpackers paradise in the north-west of Thailand. There are tonnes of activities to enjoy, loads of great hostels, and don’t get me started on the food!

Not to mention, this spot is ultra-cheap and you can truly find yourself some banger bargains. There are loads of beautiful stores to shop and plenty of beautiful souvenirs.

Pai gives off an ultra-hippy vibe and the atmosphere in this charming town is enough to make you stay for weeks… or months on end.

How to Get to Pai

There are a few ways in which you can reach Pai and for the most part, it’ll take around 3 hours of travel when coming from Chiang Mai. Let’s dive into some of the most popular methods for travelling to Pai.

Tip: If you get carsick, I’d highly recommend taking some motion sickness medication before taking this route. There are 762 turns to reach Pai and you will be taken in and around the mountains.

Minivan

First up, the most popular option is to travel via minivan. I typically recommend booking tickets via 12go! Asia as they have loads of vans available and there are usually a few times you can choose from.

Moreover, tickets are around 230 Thai Baht per person, and this is one of the most affordable ways to reach Pai. It’ll take about 3.5 hours to travel this way and there is one stop in the middle for a toilet break.

This is one of the safest and most convenient ways to reach Pai. It’s a great option and the ride is comfortable and smooth.

You will be dropped off into the heart of Pai and from here you can easily get a lift to your accommodation, or if it’s within walking distance, simply wander there. There are loads of hostels and hotels near the drop-off point, so you might be in luck!

Tip: Arrive early at the bus terminal to avoid missing the van. Be sure to check in at least 15 minutes before departure.

Scooter

If you’re looking for a little more adventure, you can take matters into your own hands and ride a scooter there. The way to go about this is to head to Aya Service in Chiang Mai and have a chat with them about hiring a scooter to go to Pai.

Aya can also deliver your luggage to Pai which will cost 100 Thai Baht. Moreover, scooter rental prices start at 140 Baht per day, but you can also get a nicer / faster scooter if you wish.

Scoopys are always a nice and reliable option. They’re easy to ride, small and great for first-time or learners. If you’d like to see some of the scooter options available, you can have a look at Aya’s website and get in contact with them.

As fun as it is riding a scooter, please take note that wet weather makes this road incredibly slippery and many people have had stacks while riding. You may want to reconsider riding there if there is a lot of rain incoming.

Tip: I’d avoid driving this route if it’s your first time on a scooter. There are a lot of vehicles that take this route and many trucks and vans drive by at very fast speeds. Not to mention, there are loads of turns to take, so it’s not the best road to learn how to ride.

Hitchhiking

Alternatively, if you’re on an ultra-tight budget, you might be able to get away with hitchhiking your way to Pai. Now, this method isn’t always guaranteed and isn’t exactly the safest method in the grand scheme of things.

However, hitchhiking is a fun experience and I can happily say that I managed to safely hitchhike my way to Pai.

Hang out on the side of the road heading towards Pai and stick your thumb out to cars going by. Once someone pulls over have a chat with the driver and see if they’re willing to take you to Pai.

The advantage of hitchhiking to Pai is that it’s one main road and most people tend to be travelling to the town. It’s pretty easy to do and will save you some $$$!

Finally, before jumping into the vehicle, be sure to confirm a price. Sometimes, people might want you to chip in a little money for fuel, or you may just get lucky and they’ll take you for free!

Where to Stay in Pai

If you’re a backpacker, solo traveller or wish to stay in a dorm, then I highly recommend staying at Nolo Hub Pai. It’s the best spot to be for the ultimate ‘home away from home’ vibe.

Nolo Hub runs activities and daily tours, and each night the hostel heads out to a different bar to party the night away. Keep in mind, it’s not a party hostel, but it has fantastic social aspects.

Additionally, there are private rooms available at Nolo Hub 2 if you wish to have a little privacy or want a little bit of luxury. Besides, these rooms are a dream and it displays beautiful Moroccan architecture; I highly recommend them!

Wrapping Up

In conclusion, Pai is nice and easy to reach and there are a few methods you can use to visit the beautiful little town. I think there is a great array of options so you can really choose which one suits you best.

All in all, the most reliable and safest way to reach Pai is to travel via the minivan services. There are multiple vans that run daily and they take you directly into the heart of Pai.

Nonetheless, be sure to choose the method that suits you best to have an enjoyable journey to Pai. Finally, be sure to check out this section of my blog for all things Thailand-related.

    History of the Area

This location is a culturally significant place and an ecological gem. It has special ties to Ngai Tahu, a Maori community.

Crazily enough, 30 million years ago, this entire place was underwater. And, the limestone outcrops that you see are made from compressed shells that once lay on the seafloor.

It wasn’t until the collision of tectonic plates that brought this place to the surface. The limestone rock was then exposed and to this day, we get to enjoy the beauty of the rocks.

While wandering the pathways, be sure to inspect the rocks, it’s said that there are sometimes fossils including shark teeth to be discovered within them.

The post Siquijor to Siargao: The Best Way to Travel appeared first on Ashlee Morgan.

    ]]>
The route from Siquijor to Siargao is quite a journey, however, many people complete this island-hopping adventure to experience both of these beautiful locations.

There are a couple of ways to travel from Siquijor to Siargao, or vice versa. However, I will be going into detail on the cheapest option as it’s the best way to reach the island for backpackers or solo travellers.

I will include a breakdown of the journey, what to expect, things to look out for and an estimation of the cost. Moreover, this information will give you a good insider’s guide on what to expect when completing the journey.

    Are These Islands Worth Visiting?

If you’re backpacking or travelling to the Philippines, then I strongly advise you to visit both of these locations. Both of them offer a different experience and both are unique to themselves.

Siquijor is known for being the ‘mystical’ island of the Philippines. And, you may even come across some black magic. I recommend coming prepared and doing some research to avoid landing yourself in any mystic danger!

Siargao is the surfing capital of the Philippines and is an absolute hotspot for backpackers, nomads and expats. There’s an awesome mixture of surfing culture, parties, social activities, hostels, resorts, tours and so much more. This is easily my favourite island in the Philippines, so don’t miss this one!

The Cheapest Route From Siquijor to Siargao

Most of you are going to want to know the cheapest way to go from Siquijor to Siargao. And, for good reason! Travel can become truly pricey, and before you know it, you’re spending hundreds, if not thousands of dollars to get around.

Keep in mind, this is quite a long journey and may take around 28 hours of travel to complete. And, it can also be completed in reverse, but you may wish to double-check the times as there may be a different timetable for the opposite journey.

A quick breakdown of the journey looks something like this:

    1. Tricycle from your accommodation to Siquijor Pier
    2. Ferry from Siquijor to Bohol and then to Cebu
    3. Change terminals at Cebu and wait for the overnight ferry
    4. Overnight ferry from Cebu to Surigao
    5. Fast boat from Surigao to Siargao
    6. Siargao Pier to your accommodation

Let’s break this down a little further so you know exactly what you’re getting yourself in for.

    Siquijor to Cebu

First things first, jump into a tricycle and pay around 150P to reach the pier. Now, be sure to double-check which pier you need to make use of to ensure you are catching the correct ferry. Most of the locals will know where to go, but there can sometimes be changes.

When I completed this route, I was taken to the Siquijor Pier. And, I boarded the fast boat which took me from Siquijor to Bohol and then over to Cebu. However, Siquijor has two piers, so be sure to go to the correct one!

In all honesty, this ferry ride was quite expensive at 1,700P. However, it was quite a fast journey and only took about 4 hours to travel from Siquijor to Cebu. I arrived at Cebu at about 1 PM and had around 7 hours to wait for the next ferry.

Tip: Purchase this ferry ticket online prior to your departure. I used Bookaway for the fast boat. However, if you are happy with a longer journey, you can take the slow boat and save money.

Waiting inside the terminal, and boarding the Ocean Jet fast boat

    Cebu

When arriving in Cebu, you will most likely pull into terminal 1. The next leg of the journey for the overnight ferry typically departs from terminal 3. If you don’t have a lot of stuff, you’ll have no issue walking along the road as there is a footpath and it is one long and straight road.

The walk is about 800 metres, which should take around 10 minutes. If you’re travelling with a lot of stuff, it might be nice to grab a motorbike to take you up to the next spot. Google Maps is the best way to find the different terminals.

Once you’ve arrived at the terminal, head through security and pay the terminal fee, which is about 10 pesos. Show them your ticket (if you’ve purchased it online), and then take a seat outside your gate.

There are toilets and some stores you can purchase food from. However, there isn’t anything fancy available, so you may have to settle for noodles and snacks. If you have a long layover, it might be nice to grab some food outside of the terminal before heading in to wait.

Tip: Purchase the overnight ferry at least 24 hours in advance to avoid missing a spot. Importantly, if you’re visiting in high season, try booking your spot a few days in advance.

    Cebu to Surigao

Next up, you’ll need to catch the overnight ferry from Cebu to Surigao. This will cost anywhere from 1,100-1,600P. I decided on sleeping in a recliner chair for the night, but there are also bunk bed options if you wish to lie down.

For what it’s worth, it’s reasonably comfortable, and the ship doesn’t rock around very much. The pass through the ocean is pretty calm, so you shouldn’t have too many issues with seasickness. Nonetheless, come prepared if you need!

Be ready to board at least an hour before departure as you will need to take a complimentary bus and then make your way onto the boat. This process can take about 20 minutes, so make sure you’re early!

On board the ship, you will have access to toilets and a small store to buy different things. You can purchase some snacks or a cup of coffee/tea if you wish.

Surprisingly enough, there was still a bit of mobile service along the way. However, it will often drop out. Be sure to download some movies or entertainment to keep yourself busy for the ride!

I found the journey to be one of the better ferry rides I’ve had in the Philippines and believe it’s a reasonably comfortable way to travel.

Tip: Spend a little bit more and opt for the bunk bed options; You’ll be able to get some rest and be ready for the final leg of the trip.

Boarding pass, recliner seat for the night and morning views

    Surigao

You will arrive at Surigao at about 7 AM. Collect your items and then make your way off the ship. Once you’ve exited the port, take a right on the main road and head towards the next pier. If you’re unsure, ask one of the staff and they will direct you to the correct location.

Upon arrival, you will need to purchase the last and final ferry (rejoice!). This ferry should cost around 400P and is a fast boat to the final stop, Siargao!

Feel free to head into the terminal, grab some breakfast or a coffee and hang around until the ferry departs.

I had to wait until 10 AM, so there were 3 hours of waiting, but I found a way to kill time.

    siquijor to siargao

    Waiting in Surigao terminal

    Surigao to Siargao

This ride is pretty quick, with only about 1.5 hours of travel. It’s the shortest ferry of the trip and a nice way to finish off the journey.

Your bags will be left up top of the boat, and then will be placed on the dock once you’ve departed.

Finally, after leaving the boat, head over to the tricycle area, and haggle for a cheaper price to reach your accommodation.

    Siargao

Now that you’ve made it to Siargao, you will have pulled into Dapa. For the most part, visitors tend to stay within the General Luna area. And, this is an absolute tourist hotspot for an awesome reason.

Try to split a tricycle with another person (especially if you’re travelling solo) as most people will be heading in the same direction. I managed to get a ride for 150P (per person) and there were three of us on the tricycle.

Most of the drivers will know where your accommodation is, but be sure to have it ready to go on maps if they haven’t heard of it.

    siquijor to siargao

    Tricycle ride to General Luna

    The Total Cost

Finally, the total cost to island hop from Siquijor to Siargao via ferries and tricycles is 3,800P or $102 AUD. However, this price may fluctuate depending on the high and low seasons.

Alternatively, if you were to take the faster and more expensive route, you could be looking at paying anywhere from 3,500P to 7,000P. It’s usually tricky to get this trip on the lower end of the scale unless you’re organised and booked well in advance.

It will take around 28 hours to complete this trip, and it can be pretty exhausting. Be sure to have yourself completely organised before completing this journey from Siquijor to Siargao.

Tip: If you wish to fly, book the flights at least one month in advance. Moreover, the flight should only set you back around 1,500P to go from Cebu to Siargao. This is a ripper of a deal, and if you’ve only got a short amount of time in the Philippines, then this is the way to go!

Why Not Make a Stop in Bohol?

If you’re planning the Siquijor to Siargao route, it might be nice to make a pitstop in Bohol for a few days. Moreover, the ferry stops over at Bohol anyway, so it’s a great way to explore another island while you’re travelling in that direction.

Bohol is home to the famous chocolate hills and gorgeous little Tarsiers. Besides, Bohol is the only island in which you can come across these unique creatures. Consider stopping here for a couple of days to break up the travel to Siargao.

    Wrapping Up

In conclusion, this is the best way to head from Siquijor to Siargao. And, since it’s such a long journey, it’s nice to read an insider’s guide on how to head from Point A to Point B.

All in all, you can decide which route works best for you. If you want to stick to a budget, take the option with all the ferries. Or, if you’re limited on time, make use of the flights!

Either way, both routes are reasonably affordable, but if you’re planning to fly, I recommend booking flights at least a month in advance to save money! The prices will skyrocket if you book them closer to the date you wish to fly.

The Hokitika Gorge Walk is the ultimate natural attraction to enjoy when passing by the town of Hokitika. Gaze at the stunning turquoise water and enjoy the serenity of nature as you complete the simple loop of the forested trail.

It’s a hotspot for visitors completing the Arthur’s Pass or coming to and from the West Coast of New Zealand and for good reason!

I’ve written everything there is to know regarding a visit to the gorge including what you may be likely to experience. So, let’s dive in!

    Where Is the Hokitika Gorge?

The Gorge is about a 30-minute drive from the town of Hokitika and it’s very easy to reach. For the most part, you will travel along one country road to reach the location, but you will also need to zig-zag your way through the countryside to reach the spot.

Nonetheless, the drive is incredibly scenic and it’s easy to make your way through the region. I would recommend downloading some offline maps in case you run out of service.

Type ‘Hokitika Gorge Parking’ into Google Maps to find the exact parking location. Moreover, there’s loads of space for at least 40-50 vehicles, so you should have no problem snagging a spot!

However, I’d imagine this spot to get pretty busy during the high season (Summer), so take that into consideration as this location may get busy!

Finally, there aren’t really any stops or points of interest along the way, so the gorge is the main attraction.

Address: Hokitika Gorge, Kokatahi 7881, New Zealand

    Visitor Information

When visiting the Hokitika Gorge, I recommend completing the 2km loop around the gorge. Moreover, the walk is relatively easy to complete with well-formed dirt tracks, safe bridges and flat paths. It’s excellent for families or those looking for a simple walk.

Besides, it should only take around an hour to complete with stops to enjoy the views.

    Distance: 2km loop trail
    Difficulty: Easy
    Toilets: Yes
    Picnic Tables: Yes
    Dogs: Not allowed
    Drones: Not allowed

Check out the signage along the way

How Is the Water So Blue?

The water gets its striking blue shade from a combination of glacial water and rock flour. As the water runs down the mountain, it slowly chips away at the lightly-coloured rock and makes the water appear a light turquoise blue.

However, the water can change colour drastically and this all has to do with the weather. During heavy downfall, the water may turn a shade of murky brown as debris and dirt are washed into the gorge.

So, when rain has held off for a while, it’s much more likely to be a strong and striking turquoise blue that we all know and love. This colour is definitely the reason so many tourists are attracted to this spot.

Nonetheless, in any shade, the river still looks incredible and it’s still a beautiful sight to see!

      Is Hokitika Gorge Worth Visiting?

The Hokitika Gorge is definitely worth a visit! It’s lovely to enjoy a wander around the entire loop and there are plenty of beautiful lookouts to enjoy.

You will get to wander along forests, boardwalks and take in breathtaking views of the gorge from all angles. I’d recommend spending anywhere from 30 minutes to 1.5 hours enjoying this beautiful space.

A handful of the viewpoints along the gorge

      The Experience

After parking your vehicle in the designated parking lot, head towards the signposts that offer information on the walk. Moreover, this is the perfect time to read up on the geology of the region and you might just learn a few new things regarding the significance of the area.

Once you’ve read up about the gorge, begin to follow the paths and you’ll shortly come upon the river. Be sure to wander over to each of the lookouts as they offer a different perspective over the gorge.

You will also cross a couple of suspension bridges along the way and get to enjoy the beautiful sounds of the forest. Take care when crossing the bridges and avoid stepping over the boundaries of the trail.

Finally, complete the entire loop, and then head back to your vehicle.

WARNING: Do NOT swim in the gorge; The water is fast-paced and many people have drowned here.

      Additional Activities near Hokitika Gorge

There are a handful of things you can check out while visiting the small town of Hokitika. Some of the places you may like to visit include:

      • Glow Worm Dell
      • Hokitika Beach Sign
      • Shipwreck Memorial
      • Sunset Point
      • Hokitika River Bridge

      • Hokitika Golf Club

Be sure to stop by a few of these places when exploring the region. And, there are loads of great restaurants and cafe locations for you to enjoy a bite!

      Wrapping Up

In conclusion, the Hokitika Gorge Walk is an excellent attraction for both locals and tourists. The stunning scenery is a great way to get out into nature and enjoy some fresh air.

It’s definitely the best activity in the small town and a spot you can’t miss if you’re driving through the area. It is a little out of the way, but I strongly believe it’s worth a quick detour, even if the water is a little murky.

The Otira Viaduct Lookout is an iconic stop-off location when completing the Arthur’s Pass road trip. Moreover, you will enjoy beautiful views over the gorge and surrounding mountains.

Besides, this is one of the best lookouts along the pass and is absolutely worth a quick pullover to enjoy the mesmerising views.

Furthermore, this post will go into detail with everything you need to know prior to visiting the lookout including the reason for its’ creation; Let’s get started!

Where Is the Otira Viaduct Lookout?

The Otira Viaduct Lookout is situated along Arthur’s Pass and close to the village. You can easily reach the lookout by turning off once you see the signposts and then heading up the gravel road to get to the car park.

There is a reasonable amount of space for about 15 vehicles, but it may be tricky to fit extra-large motorhomes. I wouldn’t recommend heading up here if you have a caravan, try finding another safe spot to pull over.

Once you’ve parked up, jump out of your vehicle and make your way over to the fence where you can enjoy the view!

Address: Otira Viraduct Lookout, 14408 Otira Highway, Arthur’s Pass Village 7875, New Zealand

      Is It Worth Visiting?

I think that the Otira Viaduct Lookout is definitely worth a quick stop! You don’t need to spend ages here; 5-10 minutes is more than enough, making it the perfect spot to stretch your legs!

Near the lookout, there isn’t much else to do, so simply take in the views and continue along your road trip!

Enjoy sweeping views over the valley and surrounds

      History of the Lookout

The lookout officially opened in 1999, and you may come across a plaque that displays the date and personnel that opened the lookout.

Moreover, the bridge is a total length of 440m long and has a unique purpose for its construction. It was built as the road below was constantly in danger of large and hazardous rocks.

Not to mention, these rocks would constantly destroy the road and block the pass. Therefore, the creation of the bridge was in order to solve the problem of a dangerous roadway.

Finally, the cost of the bridge set in at a whopping $25,000,000. However, it’s well worth the safety of tourists and locals that use this bridge daily. Besides, it creates an excellent feature while travelling the pass and is a lovely location to enjoy views.

      Additional Activities along Arthur’s Pass

There are many enjoyable things you can do while completing the journey across Arthur’s Pass. And, there are actually a handful of activities nearby the Otira Viaduct Lookout. Some of the things you may like to check out include:

Arthur’s Pass is one of the ultimate road trips to complete while exploring the South Island of New Zealand. Enjoy stunning views, fun activities and discover the history of the area whilst journeying through the landscape.

Besides, if you’re planning a South Island road trip, this pass absolutely needs to be on your itinerary as there are so many things you can see and do. From waterfalls to lookouts, you can tailor the experience to your liking and enjoy the pass in your own style!

Let’s dive into everything you need to know about visiting the gorgeous region of Arthur’s Pass.

          Where is Arthur’s Pass?

Arthur’s Pass is a part of the South Island of New Zealand. Moreover, it is one of the most famous road trips between Christchurch and the West Coast of New Zealand.

The pass is only about 45 kilometres long but usually takes around 3 hours to complete. However, if you plan to take stops, you may want to add more time to complete this road trip! I’d recommend allowing a day to complete the pass if you’re going to check out some of the sights along the way.

          Is Arthur’s Pass Worth it?

Arthur’s Pass is arguably one of the better drives in New Zealand, so yes, it is absolutely worth doing! The mountainscapes are stunningly beautiful, and the drive is very interesting with loads of beautiful landscapes to look at.

Not to mention, there are multiple activities to enjoy along the way and the drive isn’t too long so it can be completed in a day!

Where to Stay On Arthur’s Pass

There are a handful of places you could stay along Arthur’s Pass, however, I’d recommend staying within Arthur’s Pass Village. Moreover, this is in the middle of the road trip and there are a number of things you can do while in the area.

Firstly, if you’re on a budget or using a motorhome, I’d recommend staying at Avalanche Creek Shelter. Moreover, this is an excellent location to make use of your DOC camping pass or pay the small nightly fee to park up.

I will note that the facilities are pretty basic, however, there is a flushing toilet available and a shelter where you can do some cooking. Finally, this is the best spot for camping in Arthur’s Pass.

Secondly, the Alpine Motel tends to be a hit with most travellers. The rooms are nice and comfortable and it’s only a short walk into town.

9 Best Things to Do in Arthur’s Pass

          Otira Viaduct Lookout

First up on the list is the Otira Viaduct Lookout and, this is an absolute banger of a spot! In order to reach this lookout, you’ll need to come up a rather steep hill and then take the gravel road to head up to the lookout. It’s super easy to reach, and you’ll have no problem finding it.

You will get to look out over the incredible curvy bridge, with the stunning Otira River running below. Moreover, this is an awesome place to view the gorge and enjoy the seasonal snow-capped mountains.

Finally, you may receive a visit from a Kea. These are native New Zealand birds and they tend to have quite the personality! Keep food out of reach, and other valuables out of sight. These birds are quite clever and might take off with some of your goods!

Tip: It can get extremely windy and cold up here, so wear a jacket and beanie while enjoying the views outside!

          otira viaduct lookout

          Bealey Valley Track

Bealey Valley Track takes you on an escapade through a multitude of landscapes. Moreover, you will get the opportunity to view mossy trees, snow-capped mountains, icy-cold rivers, forest tracks and expansive mountainscapes.

There is so much to enjoy along this short and sweet 2.5km return journey. And, I absolutely recommend adding it to your itinerary.

Finally, be sure to check out Jacks Hut along the way, a shelter originally built in 1879. You can learn a little more about the historical location with information posts.

          Devils Punchbowl Waterfall

The Devil’s Punchbowl Waterfall is one of the most beautiful waterfalls that I came across while exploring the South Island of New Zealand.

For the most part, the waterfall is an elegant single-drop and creates an extended and stunning veil-like effect. Not to mention, the rocks look perfectly placed as if nature knew it would become a hotspot for an Insta shot.

Additionally, the walk to and from is truly beautiful as you walk amongst the forest with views over the valley. However, there are a lot of steps and a number of them are quite steep. Come prepared with comfortable walking shoes!

          Avalanche Peak

If you’re up for a challenge, look no further than Avalanche Peak. Expect six to eight hours of hiking to reach the summit with 1100 metres in elevation gain.

The views at the top are immaculate, with expansive mountainscapes and potentially snowcapped mountains. You will also enjoy the Devil’s Punchbowl Waterfall from above which is an absolute treat!

The track is considerably rocky, and you’re likely to make friends with a few Keas along the way. Be sure to prepare yourself well for this hike as it’s not to be taken lightly!

Tip: Please check the official DOC website prior to hiking for trail information. There may be some recommendations to avoid attempting the trail on certain days.

          Avalanche Creek Waterfall

Avalanche Creek Waterfall is a beautiful location to visit and is nice and close to the village. The waterfall has a few tiers and then finishes with a large stunning turquoise pool at the base.

Additionally, it’s an easy 10-minute walk to reach the waterfall. Therefore, making it the ultimate stopover location when visiting Arthur’s Pass, (and a great way to let the kids burn some energy).

Arthur’s Pass National Park Visitor Centre

Learn a little more about the geography and history of the area at the informative visitor centre. You can read up a heap of information and things to do while completing the pass and chat with the staff on recommendations for your visit.

Not to mention, there are loads of old photographs displaying the history of the village. This is a great spot for children and adults to learn a little more about the region.

          Arthur’s Pass Store

Fancy a bite to eat? Look no further than the Arthur’s Pass store. Moreover, this little gem is jam-packed with almost anything you could wish to nibble on! From pies and pastries to sandwiches and burgers, you can find just about anything in this spot.

Additionally, there is a bottle shop and a small general store if you need to pick up a few basic items while en route. Be sure to support the locals and purchase a few goodies!

          Arthur’s Pass Scenic Lookout

This scenic lookout is a beautiful spot to stop for a few moments and enjoy sweeping views over the country and mountainside. During the cooler months, you’ll likely be able to catch some snowcapped mountains which look stunning in the distance.

Furthermore, there’s plenty of space for parking in the gravel area, and you can wander down to the river to enjoy the icy-cold water.

          Castle Hill Conservation Area

Last but not least, is the incredibly unique Castle Hill Conservation Area. And, to be honest, I think this was my favourite locations while completing the pass. I hadn’t seen anything like this before and it was a one-of-a-kind spot!

The shape of the boulders is pretty impressive and it’s humbling to walk amongst these towering formations. Not to mention, there are loads of informative signposts that discuss the geology, history and significance of the area.

          Wrapping Up

In conclusion, Arthur’s Pass is an excellent road trip on the South Island of New Zealand and is well worth the journey. There’s so much to see along this drive and so many great spots to pull over and enjoy.

If you’re on the fence in regards to completing this road trip, I would advise completing it. Since there are multiple points of interest, it makes the drive easy and fun to complete.

There are a few New Zealand Travel SIM cards on offer, making it tricky to decide on which provider to go with. It’s great that there are multiple options, but knowing what to go for is essential for your phone habits.

Additionally, I’ve broken down some of the key features that you may like to look out for and displayed some tips for travelling. Moreover, these will give you a good idea of things you need to consider before purchasing and how to get yourself set up and ready for travel.

Let’s dive into everything you need to know so that you are ready to travel New Zealand with the appropriate SIM card.

Please note: Prices will likely fluctuate, and the companies may promote specific deals. In order to get updated pricing, be sure to check on each of the company’s websites.

How to Choose a Travel Sim for New Zealand

There are a couple of things that you’ll want to put into consideration when choosing a sim card for New Zealand. Some of the key points that you need to keep in mind include:

            • Data coverage
            • Length of plan
            • Pricing
            • Text and calls
            • Amount of data
            • Top-up options

Above are just a few of the key factors that you may like to keep in mind when it comes time to purchase a sim card. Be sure to take note of these factors and apply them to what you’re looking for in a SIM card.

            New Zealand Travel SIM card

What Are the Companies That Offer Travel Sim Cards in New Zealand?

There is a range of mobile service providers from which you can purchase a travel SIM card. Moreover, a few of these companies include Spark, One (Vodafone) and 2degrees.

For the most part, these are the main companies that travellers tend to go with on a trip to New Zealand.

Note: If you are flying from Australia, have a look into what your provider offers. For example, Telstra offers international roaming to New Zealand for $5 AUD per day including 1GB of data. If you’re only in New Zealand for a short period of time, this might be worth looking into.

How to Change a Sim Card

Firstly, you need to ensure that your phone is unlocked. And, I’m not talking about the typical unlocking of your password. A locked phone is a device that can only be used with the original service provider.

In order to get the phone unlocked, you will need to talk to the mobile provider and it’s usually a simple process to break free from the network.

Be sure to check that your phone is unlocked so that you can use SIM cards from anywhere in the world on your device.

Next up, you need to physically change the SIM card. For the most part, when purchasing the SIM, the new provider will put it in for you so that you don’t need to worry about doing it yourself. However, if you have to do it, I recommend bringing the piece that comes with your device to pop out the SIM card.

Finally, simply swap the SIM cards over and you should be good to go! Should you have any issues, be sure to contact your provider immediately to troubleshoot the problem.

The Best New Zealand Travel SIMs

I’m going to go ahead and display a range of options from multiple companies so that you can be assured that you’re making the right decision based on your needs.

Definitely have a look into each of them, and check out the company’s websites in case they have some offers or have changed their services.

Note: All prices are listed in New Zealand Dollars.

            2Degrees

2degrees has some awesome offers, and while they aren’t technically labelled as ‘travel SIMs’, they can definitely be used for that purpose.

There is a huge range of prepaid SIMs that you can choose from, so you can get a small deal or a large deal to suit your needs perfectly!

Not to mention, all of these deals offer carryover data which is great if you are staying in the country for a while. And, the largest deal is a bargain in comparison to some of the smaller deals. Therefore, it’s great for those of you that need to make use of lots of internet.

$10 for 30 Days with 250MB of Data
$19 for 30 Days with 1.5GB of Data
$30 for 30 Days with 3GB of Data
$60 for 30 Days with 15GB of Data
$85 for 30 Days with 120GB of Data

Check out the options from 2degrees here.

            One

One is a tried and true data service and they offer a great range of New Zealand travel SIM options. Moreover, you can collect these SIM cards at any of the airports and stores around the country.

One is the new rebranding from Vodafone. They are the same provider, they have simply changed their name recently.

$29 for 30 Days with 2GB of Data
$49 for 60 Days with 10GB of Data
$69 for 60 Days with 40GB of Data
$99 for 60 Days with 100GB of Data

Check out the options from one here.

            Spark

Spark is one of the most popular options for travel SIM cards in New Zealand. There are a few great options and they’re all at the standard pricing and include great service.

3G is the most widely accessible network over the vast majority of New Zealand and with plenty of spots in the popular and mainly-visited locations offering 4G service.

Finally, 5G is available in all of the larger main towns and cities.

$29 for 3 Months with 2GB of Data
$49 for 3 Months with 10GB of Data
$79 for 3 Months with 50GB of Data

Check out the options from Spark here.

In terms of coverage, pricing and mobile data, the best travel phone SIM in New Zealand is 2degrees. Moreover, the options are great and it’s a reliable network to travel with.

Thousands of visitors make use of this network and have loads of great things to say about it. So, I’d recommend checking out this SIM card on your trip to New Zealand.

Alternatively, the second best option seems to be Spark. Moreover, they have great coverage and some awesome options for packages.

            Wrapping Up

So there you have it, some of the best travel phone SIMs from New Zealand. I hope this guide has offered you some ideas on SIMs that you could purchase and has helped you to make an informed decision on which provider to choose.

If you plan on sticking to the cities, all of the networks will work just fine. However, if you’re thinking of heading off the beaten path and taking a road trip around the country, you may need to go with a slightly more expensive option.
