The Castle Hill Rocks in New Zealand are an absolute gem of a location. Besides, this unique site makes up part of the Arthur’s Pass making it an excellent stopping point on your road trip.
Enjoy wandering amongst towering limestone, sandstone and mudstone formations. Some of which are very unique shapes.

Where Is Castle Hill Rocks?
Castle Hill Rocks is located along Arthur’s Pass within the Castle Hill region. It’s right in the middle of the pass and is very easy to reach.
While driving along the pass, you’ll come upon a wide open space with lots of farmland and large rocks; This is where you will find the unique conservation area!
There are brown signposts that are labelled with the name of the conservation area. Take note of them and pull over to enjoy the space. Not to mention, there is plenty of parking, however, this spot can get quite busy, so be prepared for that!

Is Castle Hill Rocks Worth Visiting?
Yes, Castle Hill Rocks are definitely worth a visit! Considering it’s easy to reach, you’d be crazy not to make a pitstop while taking the journey along Arthur’s Pass.
It’s a nice and easy walk through the conservation area and the views around the place are quite spectacular. There are cultural, historical and geological aspects to enjoy when experiencing this location; It’s truly one-of-a-kind!
Besides, this is an excellent way to enjoy some time in nature and discover some information on the significance of the site to Maori culture.

There are a handful of things that you may wish to know prior to visiting. Take note of these or check the official DOC website for updated information.

Time: 30 minutes – 1 hour

Drones: Not allowed, you will need a permit
Rock Climbing
Rock Climbing is allowed in the conservation area, however, there is a code of conduct that you must follow. I recommend reading the information on this website to ensure you are climbing in line with the conduct.
Importantly, please refrain from damaging any of the rocks, and avoid stepping on vegetation. At the end of the day, this is a sacred place and must be wholly respected.
History of the Area
This location is a culturally significant place and an ecological gem. It has special ties to Ngai Tahu, a Maori community.
Crazily enough, 30 million years ago, this entire place was underwater. And, the limestone outcrops that you see are made from compressed shells that once lay on the seafloor.
It wasn’t until the collision of tectonic plates that brought this place to the surface. The limestone rock was then exposed and to this day, we get to enjoy the beauty of the rocks.
While wandering the pathways, be sure to inspect the rocks, it’s said that there are sometimes fossils including shark teeth to be discovered within them.
Things to Do When Visiting Castle Hill Rocks
Explore the Walking Trail
For the most part, there is one loop that will take you around the whole of the conservation area. Please stick to the tracks to avoid trampling on vegetation. For the most part, the trail itself is about 1.5km in length and is reasonably easy to complete.
Not to mention, you can complete the trail in any direction you wish. Either way is fantastic and you will be greeted with beautiful views over the farmlands from the top.
Finally, I’d recommend sticking to the trail to avoid damaging any plants as there are a number of rare species in this conservation area.
Read the Signage
There are many informative signposts when wandering the trails that I recommend stopping for. Moreover, these will douse you with information in regard to the cultural significance and environmental history of the area.
I find it incredibly interesting to take a moment to enjoy these signposts. There’s so much to learn and it gives you a better understanding of the area. Don’t walk past them!
Enjoy the Views
Upon reaching the top of the hill, you can turn around and enjoy the stunning views over the surrounding landscape. You will get to see mountains, farmlands, and beautiful rocks framing the way.
It’s truly an impressive location and the views are simply magnificent! Additionally, there are multiple locations in which you stop to enjoy the views.
If you carefully wander off the past (avoid stepping on vegetation) you can carefully climb onto some of the rocks to enjoy a higher perspective. However, avoid doing so in cooler months as the rocks can become icy and slippery.
The surrounding views are incredibly beautiful!

There are so many fascinating and towering rock formations to enjoy. You can get right up close to them and enjoy an awe-inspiring experience in nature. It’s truly a unique place and wonderful to enjoy such a sight.

There are loads of things you can do in the area, and you’re probably enjoying a wonderful road trip along Arthur’s Pass. Depending on which way you’re headed there are a few things you may wish to check out.
Moreover, if you’re keen on seeing some more viewpoints, I recommend stopping over at Otira Viaduct Lookout. Or, you may wish to enjoy a waterfall at the impressive Devil’s Punchbowl.
Nonetheless, at the end of the pass in Hokitika, I highly recommend checking out the Hokitika Gorge. It’s another powerfully impressive location that rings in thousands of tourists year-round.
