Otira Viaduct Lookout, New Zealand: Tips for Visiting

By 18 June, 2023New Zealand

The Otira Viaduct Lookout is an iconic stop-off location when completing the Arthur’s Pass road trip. Moreover, you will enjoy beautiful views over the gorge and surrounding mountains.

Besides, this is one of the best lookouts along the pass and is absolutely worth a quick pullover to enjoy the mesmerising views.

Furthermore, this post will go into detail with everything you need to know prior to visiting the lookout including the reason for its’ creation; Let’s get started!

Where Is the Otira Viaduct Lookout?

The Otira Viaduct Lookout is situated along Arthur’s Pass and close to the village. You can easily reach the lookout by turning off once you see the signposts and then heading up the gravel road to get to the car park.

There is a reasonable amount of space for about 15 vehicles, but it may be tricky to fit extra-large motorhomes. I wouldn’t recommend heading up here if you have a caravan, try finding another safe spot to pull over.

Once you’ve parked up, jump out of your vehicle and make your way over to the fence where you can enjoy the view!

Address: Otira Viraduct Lookout, 14408 Otira Highway, Arthur’s Pass Village 7875, New Zealand

History of the Lookout

The lookout officially opened in 1999, and you may come across a plaque that displays the date and personnel that opened the lookout.

Moreover, the bridge is a total length of 440m long and has a unique purpose for its construction. It was built as the road below was constantly in danger of large and hazardous rocks.

Not to mention, these rocks would constantly destroy the road and block the pass. Therefore, the creation of the bridge was in order to solve the problem of a dangerous roadway.

Finally, the cost of the bridge set in at a whopping $25,000,000. However, it’s well worth the safety of tourists and locals that use this bridge daily. Besides, it creates an excellent feature while travelling the pass and is a lovely location to enjoy views.
