How to Get There

Depending on the location you are travelling from, this will obviously change drastically. However, most tourists are coming from the Great Ocean Road. Therefore, if you’re starting at the largest, closest town, Apollo Bay, continue following the directions below.

Keep in mind the access to this location is on dirt roads. Therefore, it’s not exactly suitable for big rigs. Also, I’d recommend taking it easy on the corrugated roads as it’s easy to lose traction around one of the many corners.

Finally, keep in mind that trucks use the area, so follow the signage and look out for them.

  1. Head south on the Great Ocean Road B100 and follow for roughly 13km
  2. Turn right onto Binns Road and follow for about 12km
  3. Continue following the signage of Binns Road, don’t turn off onto any other road
  4. Park in the space provided at the Redwoods Forest

Best Time of Year to Visit

In terms of crowds, the best time of year to visit would be around July to August. However, these are also the coldest months of the year.

Besides, if you’d prefer to visit when the weather is warmer, I’d recommend any time from January to April.

Typically, anytime from February onwards sees a reduction in crowds. Furthermore, I visited this location in April, and while there were a few people around, it was mostly quiet and peaceful.

Therefore, choose the time best suited to you and plan accordingly. This location would be stunning during the early morning as the fog lifts and the sun rises.

Information on the Otways Redwood Forest

Firstly, the species of these trees are Sequoia Sempervirens, better known as Californian Redwoods. And, they were planted in this location in 1936 by Victorian foresters.

Also, the beautiful Aire River trickles alongside the forest, making it another great feature to explore. Besides, the trees lining the river look amazing from different perspectives.

Furthermore, this would be a beautiful proposal location. Considering the atmosphere is perfectly peaceful and it’s a stunning area for photos.

Additionally, the light filtering through the trees looks magnificent. Therefore, making it a beautiful photoshoot location to hire a professional photographer. Or, bring your camera to take some fun photos.

Tips for Visiting the Redwoods in the Otways

There are a couple of things that you should know before visiting to ensure you have the ultimate preparation to enjoy this charming place.

After parking your car in the designated area, wander down the short pathway and enter the forest. There is space for roughly eight vehicles. Furthermore, I suggest visiting this location on a fine day to enjoy the blue sky peeking through the tops of the trees.

Secondly, there are a couple of park benches, so I’d recommend packing some lunch or snacks to enjoy here. However, please take all your rubbish home with you.

Thirdly, there is a signpost with information on the forest and surrounding area. It’s a good idea to take a moment to read before entering the forest.

Fourthly, it’s nice to spend at least half an hour in the Otway redwood forest to soak up that enchanting vibe. And, it’s a simple location to wander, with no set pathways.

Finally, there are no dogs allowed. Unfortunately, you’ll have to leave your furry friend behind as they are not permitted in the forest, let alone the majority of the Great Otway National Park. Also, there are no toilet facilities at this location.
