Lorne is a terrific location for chasing waterfalls, and better yet, exploring Sheoak Falls. Not to mention, this cascade is a fantastic way to escape the warm weather and enjoy the refreshing environment of a lively water feature.
Moreover, this idyllic location is a great activity to add to the bucket list as it’s an easy hike and enjoyable for lovers of the outdoors. And, it’s perfect for children, considering the walk isn’t overly long.
Additionally, this waterfall is easily accessible from Lorne, making it the perfect day trip adventure while enjoying a holiday, and it’s one of the best things to do in Lorne.
About the Waterfall
The Sheoak Falls in Lorne is a scenic cascade surrounded by cliffs and bush. Also, there are other sights in the area, such as the Sheoak picnic area and Swallow Cave.
Firstly, the water comes from Sheoak Creek. And, there is a decent flow of water year-round, making this waterfall an excellent attraction any time of year. Moreover, the waterfall stands at roughly 15m, and the water streams down the face of the cliff.
Secondly, there is a large pool at the base of the falls, which may be nice for a quick and refreshing dip. Not to mention, this waterfall creates epic long exposures for all photography lovers.
Finally, this is one of the best things to do in Lorne as it’s easily accessible via the Great Ocean Road and a straightforward hike.
How to Get To Sheoak Falls
In order to reach Sheoak Falls, you will need to use the Great Ocean Road, which is route B100. Furthermore, if you are coming from Lorne, you will need to take a right on the Great Ocean Road, heading towards Apollo Bay.
From there, it will take roughly 8 minutes of a 5.9km drive to reach this location. Follow this route for about 5km, and then you will come across a sign that says ‘Sheoak Falls’. Turn right onto the road and use the parking space provided. There are roughly 20 parking spaces available.
Then, once you’ve parked your vehicle, follow the signage towards the trail. Also, this is a great time to read about the other activities in the area and find out some information.
Finally, the return hike to the waterfall is 1.4km, which should take around 30 minutes. Keep in mind that there are several steps and dirt paths to walk on.

The Facilities and Visitor Information
There are no toilets or drinking water facilities at the Sheoak Falls or car park.

The Walk to the Waterfall
The return hike to the waterfall is roughly 1.4km and should take you around 30 minutes to complete, not including the time viewing the cascade. While strolling the path, enjoy breathtaking views of the Great Ocean Road and ocean.
Additionally, there are lots of steps, though they aren’t of extreme descent. Also, the boardwalk makes the course comfortable and smooth to wander along.
At times, the path may get a little rocky and narrow; So take your time and watch your footing. Upon arrival at the falls, there are a couple of viewing platforms and a bench seat to enjoy the view. So, enjoy a moment of serenity in this blissful location.

Additional Hiking Trails
If you’d like to make this waterfall excursion a day-long adventure, and you enjoy lots of walking, I would recommend completing the Sheoak Falls to Sheoak Picnic Area hike.
Firstly, you can begin your hike at either starting location, but you need to complete a return trip via the same route.
I would recommend starting your hike at the Sheoak Falls car park simply because it is much more accessible and a smoother drive than heading inland to the picnic area. I found the dirt roads to the picnic spot were considerably eroded and very narrow. Also, you may likely come across wildlife crossing the road.
So, if you’re beginning your journey at the Sheoak Falls Carpark, the following paragraph is the information you will need to consider.

Sheoak Falls to Sheoak Picnic Area
- Park your vehicle at the Sheoak Falls parking area.
- Follow the trail for 700m to the waterfall.
- After viewing the waterfall, use the trail to backtrack and begin the second part of the hike.
- You will arrive at a steep set of stairs, head up this way for roughly 540m.
- Keep in mind, you will need to complete a creek crossing, but do not attempt this if the water level is high. And, take care when walking on the river stones as they may be slippery. Shortly after this, you will arrive at Swallow Cove.
- After viewing Swallow Cove, continue along the Sheoak track to reach the picnic area.
- Finally, spend some time exploring the area before returning along the same path.
Upon arrival at the picnic area, you will find toilets, picnic tables, sheltered barbeque areas and other walking paths. I would recommend packing a small lunch to enjoy in this lush and forested area.
Tips for Visiting
Can you swim at Sheoak Falls?
Yes, you can. However, the water is quite dark, and it isn’t easy to see beneath the surface. Also, there is often a lot of branches and fallen tree limbs in the water, so watch out for them. Nonetheless, a quick dip in the water on a warm day would be absolutely refreshing! Please wear reef or environmentally-friendly sunscreen while swimming.
Wear appropriate footwear
Avoid stubbing a toe or tripping over a step in thongs. Wear a pair of runners, hiking boots or any closed toe shoe to ensure your feet are protected.
Wear protective clothing and sunscreen
This one goes without saying; The majority of this pathway is exposed to the sun, so it’s best to apply plenty of sunscreen to avoid getting burnt.
Allow plenty of time
If you’ve only planned to visit the waterfall, I would suggest allowing a little extra time to explore Swallow Cave. Unfortunately, I didn’t allow enough time while visiting the waterfall, so I didn’t explore the cave. However, I will be returning to this location to do some further exploring.
