By 29 May, 2021October 29th, 2021Travel Australia, Victoria

Steavenson Falls, located in Marysville, is an impressive Victorian waterfall. In fact, it’s one of Victorias tallest waterfalls, presenting an astonishing 84m drop.

This Marysville waterfall and the river was discovered in 1862 by John Steavenson. It became a leading tourist attraction in the late 1800s, bringing in local and international travellers.

Unfortunately, the Black Saturday bushfires destroyed an extensive amount of bushland surrounding the waterfall and Marysville town. Thankfully the land is slowly regenerating.

The rapid waterfall is a short drive or decent hike from the Marysville township.

Not to mention, this waterfall in Marysville is the perfect day trip from Melbourne for all ages; an excellent way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Don’t forget to pack a camera; there’s plenty of awesome photo opportunities!

It’s best to spend at least an hour wandering around the scenic reserve while enjoying the waterfall, walking trails and reading the informative signposts. Be sure to explore all the walking trails and viewing platforms; there are plenty of sensational perspectives to be seen.

How to Get to the Waterfall

If you’re planning a day trip to Marysville from Melbourne, the drive will take roughly 2 hours and is a 102km one-way trip. However, the road trip to visit this Victorian waterfall is well worth the excursion; you’ll be spoilt with a magnificent journey through the Black Spur.

Once you’ve arrived in Marysville, enjoy some time wandering around the town. Besides, there are plenty of marvellous places to enjoy lunch.

After exploring the charming town, take Pack Road and Falls Road to reach the popular Marysville waterfall. Thankfully this Victorian waterfall is easily accessible by 2WD or 4WD.

Alternatively, hike from Marysville town along Tree Fern Gully Track. Start by parking at or near Gallipoli park and use Tree Fern Gully Track to get to the falls. This hike is a rewarding 6.8km round-trip.

Preparation for Your Trip

While visiting the magnificent Steavenson waterfall in Marysville, be sure to stick to the pathways and avoid going off track. The wide gravel paths are safe for prams or wheelchairs, making it an accessible adventure.

It’s best to wear closed-toe shoes with plenty of tread on them. The gravel paths are safe to walk on, but some of the bridges and steps may be slippery when wet.

There is shelter provided at the beginning of the entrance, along with some seats.

Additionally, there are also public toilets available.

Unfortunately, dogs and pets are not allowed.

Things to Do at Steavenson Falls

Enjoy the simple 700m return walk to view the waterfall amongst the beautiful trees. Once witnessing the waterfall from the first viewing platform, go down the steps and walk across the bridge to view the stream.

While you’re at the bridge, it’s typical for plenty of wildlife to be in the area; keep an eye out for platypus within the Steavenson River.

Take the Keppel Lookout trail to reach the Upper falls lookout; the walk is roughly 1.5km return. Upon reaching the top, you will witness immense views over the falls and ranges. Furthermore, continue along the trail to reach Keppel Lookout.

If you’re up for a late-night adventure, visiting Steavenson falls is a fantastic option as the attraction is open until 11:00 PM. The waterfall is lit up after dusk thanks to the floodlight, powered by the hydroelectric turbine.

Don’t forget to rest on the park benches while enjoying the waterfall.

Please keep in mind that swimming is prohibited at this Marysville waterfall as the water catchment supplies the town.

Entrance Fee and Opening Hours

The opening hours of Steavensons falls are 8 AM – 11 PM daily.

While there is no entrance fee to the waterfall, a parking ticket is necessary. At the time of writing this post, I paid $3 for parking. Be sure to display this ticket on the dashboard of your car.

If you’d prefer to avoid the parking fee, there are several parking spaces located along Falls Road, though a walk alongside the road is required to reach the falls.

Additionally, the falls can be accessed by Tree Fern Gully Track. I would recommend visiting the falls via this track throughout peak periods like summer holidays and weekends.

The best time to visit this waterfall would be during off-peak periods like weekdays and cooler months. Also, visiting the falls after plenty of rain is a good idea as the water flow is much higher.

Next, visit Bruno’s Art and Sculpture Garden and explore the unique statues throughout the garden. Luckily, this garden is easy to locate as its on the same road as the waterfall.
