By 22 November, 2022January 4th, 2023Vietnam

Named the Great Wall of Vietnam, the Hang Mua Cave displays inspiration from its larger sibling in China and is easily the most beautiful viewpoint in Ninh Binh. Not to mention, the Hang Mua cave has become one of the most popular viewpoint locations in Vietnam. And, it’s totally understandable to see why!

Just like a lot of the tourist attractions in Vietnam, there is plenty of history surrounding this beautiful location and I briefly cut into the history of this viewpoint within the post. Additionally, there are lots of tips and insider advice into visiting Hang Mua so that you can ensure the optimal visit to this beautiful attraction.

Finally, the Hang Mua was a very special place that I visited while backpacking solo through South East Asia and I highly recommend that you pay this location a visit. I loved it so much and I would do anything to get back here to experience the serenity of this viewpoint again!

The Hang Mua Caves

History of the Mua Caves

Hoa Lu is a very special place in Vietnam, as it used to be the capital of the country between the 10th and 11th centuries.

Not to mention, there is a story that goes around that during the Vietnam and Mongolian war when the King needed entertainment or distraction, he would visit the Hang Mua cave to watch dancers. Consequently, this is how the location received its name, which translates to dancing cave.

The Lying Dragon is another historical spot along the peak of the Hang Mua cave. Moreover, it plays its part in the Tran Dynasty and is now a popular selfie spot upon completion of the hike. I recommend taking a moment to take in the awe of the beauty of this ancient creation.

How Many Steps Does It Take to Reach the Peak of Hang Mua?

Firstly, you will need to wander a short but sweet path to reach the base of the steps that lead to the viewpoint. Nonetheless, this path is absolutely stunning to walk along with views over the rice paddies and a gorgeous little lake. It almost feels like you’re stepping foot into a fairytale!

While wandering the path, be sure to look up at the views of Hang Mua above you. It’s a spectacular perspective of what you are soon to reach!

Moreover, there are roughly 486 steps to reach the highest peak of the viewpoint. Keep in mind, there are two different viewpoints to visit, but I recommend taking the path to the left to see views over Tam Coc. Otherwise, if you have plenty of time, feel free to complete both sides of the trail to soak up all the views.

Finally, this is the only place you will get to enjoy views over Trang An and Tam Coc. And, it’s a damn good place to relax for a moment while watching the boats float down the river.

How to Get to the Hang Mua Cave

There are a few ways you can reach the Hang Mua cave to suit everybody’s needs. Firstly, I recommend taking a taxi if you aren’t willing to ride scooters and aren’t interested in a tour. However, this will be one of the most costly ways to reach the viewpoint. Nonetheless, if you are visiting from Ninh Binh township, it won’t be as expensive.

Secondly, the best way to visit the Hang Mua cave is via motorbike or scooter. I personally rode a motorbike by myself to this viewpoint and found it relatively easy to reach. Most of the roads feel quite safe to ride along and the signage was easy to read. I highly recommend using Google Maps for directions.

Finally, another great way to reach this viewpoint is by group tour. There are full-day tours that run from Hanoi which visit a few of the best tourist attractions around Ninh Binh. Not to mention, this is a great way to meet other travellers and enjoy a day packed with information about Ninh Binh.

Tip: I highly recommend visiting the caves in the early morning or late afternoon. Avoid visiting during the day as it will be extremely hot!

What to Bring to the Mua Caves

There are a few things that you will definitely need to bring, and it pays to be prepared. Vietnam is a very hot and humid country and you may find it tricky to hike up to this viewpoint. I took numerous stops during my journey as I was sweating profusely!

I highly recommend keeping your hands free, therefore, not holding things like a water bottle, phone or camera is best. So, bring a backpack to stash everything away. There are some large steps, and tripping is a possible accident; You wouldn’t want to have your hands full of expensive devices!

Inside your backpack, load up a large bottle of water, some snacks to enjoy once you reach the top, a large plastic raincoat (in case of a downpour), cash (there are no ATMs around), and any sort of camera gear you wish.

Finally, I recommend wearing closed-toe shoes with plenty of grip. Some of these steps may be a little slippery and you most definitely won’t want to take a tumble! You will come across numerous Vietnamese trekking this viewpoint in high heels, flip flops, and barefoot. Don’t copy them, they are used to the conditions and know what they’re doing.

Tip: It might be nice to bring a fan to cool yourself down. Nonetheless, you will be extremely hot so I advise wearing loose-fitted and breathable clothing. Don’t forget your SPF!

Tips for Visiting

Unfortunately, Vietnam is a place where numerous scams happen daily. However, don’t be afraid of travelling a country like Vietnam. For the most part, the scams are only the locals trying to earn a few dollars out of tourists. And, you’d be surprised that they sometimes scam their own people too!

One of the most common scams for the Hang Mua caves is the parking scam. Upon arrival to the viewpoint, you will see numerous people persuading you into their parking lots; This usually comes with a price of around 20,000VND. You don’t need to use their parking. Keep driving further until you reach the Hang Mua Ecolodge where the parking is free.

Evidently, 20,000VND isn’t a lot of money. However, it encourages the locals to continue scamming tourists. Feel free to use their parking space if you wish!

Additionally, check the weather! Understandably, it’s quite difficult to figure out what the weather is doing in South East Asian countries, and for the most part, it always seems hot and rainy.

However, it might be best to chat with a local if they think a storm or heavy falls may be incoming. I wouldn’t recommend hiking to this viewpoint in a storm as you are high up and the rocks on the way down will be very slippery.

Additionally, there are small stalls where you can purchase snacks and drinks. And, surprisingly enough, you’ll come across a small stall half way up the mountain selling random snacks and drinks. So, if you run out mid-hike, you’ll be able to get your hands on a nice cold bottle of water.

Enjoy a Stay at the Mua Caves Ecolodge

This is an absolutely beautiful place to stay and you will get the chance to enjoy close proximity to the Mua Caves. So, why not kick your feet up and enjoy this serene location for a couple of nights!?
