Knowing how to get to Pai can be a little tricky for first-time visitors. Besides, it’s high up in the north of Thailand and very close to the Myanmar border.

Almost all visitors coming to Pai are travelling from Chiang Mai, so that is the travel route on which this blog post is based.

Let’s dive into everything you need to know in regards to travelling to Pai so that you can get on the road ASAP!

Is Pai Worth Visiting?

Pai is an absolute backpackers paradise in the north-west of Thailand. There are tonnes of activities to enjoy, loads of great hostels, and don’t get me started on the food!

Not to mention, this spot is ultra-cheap and you can truly find yourself some banger bargains. There are loads of beautiful stores to shop and plenty of beautiful souvenirs.

Pai gives off an ultra-hippy vibe and the atmosphere in this charming town is enough to make you stay for weeks… or months on end.

How to Get to Pai

There are a few ways in which you can reach Pai and for the most part, it’ll take around 3 hours of travel when coming from Chiang Mai. Let’s dive into some of the most popular methods for travelling to Pai.

Tip: If you get carsick, I’d highly recommend taking some motion sickness medication before taking this route. There are 762 turns to reach Pai and you will be taken in and around the mountains.

Minivan

First up, the most popular option is to travel via minivan. I typically recommend booking tickets via 12go! Asia as they have loads of vans available and there are usually a few times you can choose from.

Moreover, tickets are around 230 Thai Baht per person, and this is one of the most affordable ways to reach Pai. It’ll take about 3.5 hours to travel this way and there is one stop in the middle for a toilet break.

This is one of the safest and most convenient ways to reach Pai. It’s a great option and the ride is comfortable and smooth.

You will be dropped off into the heart of Pai and from here you can easily get a lift to your accommodation, or if it’s within walking distance, simply wander there. There are loads of hostels and hotels near the drop-off point, so you might be in luck!

Tip: Arrive early at the bus terminal to avoid missing the van. Be sure to check in at least 15 minutes before departure.

Scooter

If you’re looking for a little more adventure, you can take matters into your own hands and ride a scooter there. The way to go about this is to head to Aya Service in Chiang Mai and have a chat with them about hiring a scooter to go to Pai.

Aya can also deliver your luggage to Pai which will cost 100 Thai Baht. Moreover, scooter rental prices start at 140 Baht per day, but you can also get a nicer / faster scooter if you wish.

Scoopys are always a nice and reliable option. They’re easy to ride, small and great for first-time or learners. If you’d like to see some of the scooter options available, you can have a look at Aya’s website and get in contact with them.

As fun as it is riding a scooter, please take note that wet weather makes this road incredibly slippery and many people have had stacks while riding. You may want to reconsider riding there if there is a lot of rain incoming.

Tip: I’d avoid driving this route if it’s your first time on a scooter. There are a lot of vehicles that take this route and many trucks and vans drive by at very fast speeds. Not to mention, there are loads of turns to take, so it’s not the best road to learn how to ride.

Hitchhiking

Alternatively, if you’re on an ultra-tight budget, you might be able to get away with hitchhiking your way to Pai. Now, this method isn’t always guaranteed and isn’t exactly the safest method in the grand scheme of things.

However, hitchhiking is a fun experience and I can happily say that I managed to safely hitchhike my way to Pai.

Hang out on the side of the road heading towards Pai and stick your thumb out to cars going by. Once someone pulls over have a chat with the driver and see if they’re willing to take you to Pai.

The advantage of hitchhiking to Pai is that it’s one main road and most people tend to be travelling to the town. It’s pretty easy to do and will save you some $$$!

Finally, before jumping into the vehicle, be sure to confirm a price. Sometimes, people might want you to chip in a little money for fuel, or you may just get lucky and they’ll take you for free!

Where to Stay in Pai

If you’re a backpacker, solo traveller or wish to stay in a dorm, then I highly recommend staying at Nolo Hub Pai. It’s the best spot to be for the ultimate ‘home away from home’ vibe.

Nolo Hub runs activities and daily tours, and each night the hostel heads out to a different bar to party the night away. Keep in mind, it’s not a party hostel, but it has fantastic social aspects.

Additionally, there are private rooms available at Nolo Hub 2 if you wish to have a little privacy or want a little bit of luxury. Besides, these rooms are a dream and it displays beautiful Moroccan architecture; I highly recommend them!

Wrapping Up

In conclusion, Pai is nice and easy to reach and there are a few methods you can use to visit the beautiful little town. I think there is a great array of options so you can really choose which one suits you best.

All in all, the most reliable and safest way to reach Pai is to travel via the minivan services. There are multiple vans that run daily and they take you directly into the heart of Pai.

Nonetheless, be sure to choose the method that suits you best to have an enjoyable journey to Pai. Finally, be sure to check out this section of my blog for all things Thailand-related.

Freedom Beach is in the southern region of the island of Koh Tao, Thailand. It’s one of the Southernmost beaches of the island and has become an absolute hit among tourists.

Freedom Beach is actually slightly hidden, and you will need to pay a small entry fee of 50 Thai Baht to reach the region. From here, you can also head up to the John Suwan Viewpoint to do some further exploring.

Views along the boardwalk make this activity a must-do!

Is Freedom Beach Worth Visiting?

Freedom Beach is absolutely worth visiting! It’s definitely one of the most beautiful beaches on Koh Tao and is a massive hit among locals and tourists.

It’s the perfect spot to kick back and do some relaxing and it’s also perfect for those of you that want to do some exploring in the surrounding jungle.

I highly recommend hanging out at this beach for a few hours when it comes time to visit the gorgeous island of Koh Tao. You will regret it if you miss this gem!

Things to Do at Freedom Beach

Firstly, the most prominent activity is to enjoy some relaxing time on the sand and soak up the pure beauty that is Freedom Beach. You’ll notice that there are some trees lining the shore, so feel free to head in between them or a little further back if you want to lie on one of the banana lounges.

Additionally, there are some hammocks floating around, so if you’re lucky, you may want to snap up one of those.

Secondly, wander along the boardwalk for epic views over the water and to reach Taa Toh Lagoon Beach. Moreover, this is another stunning spot to hang out, and the water is immeasurably blue.

Thirdly, hire some snorkelling gear and head out into the water to see life under the surface. You may spot some reefs and fish doing their thing. The water is pretty flat, so you won’t have to fight against waves to do some exploring.

Finally, head over to Freedom Beach Bar for a fresh coconut or pad Thai. Moreover, this is an excellent spot to refuel yourself, relax on the bean bags, and enjoy a nice breeze while soaking up the beautiful views of the beach.

Furthermore, if you want to do a little additional exploring, I recommend heading up to the John Suwan Viewpoint. This lookout is especially spectacular during sunset!

The John Suwan Viewpoint at sunset is incredible!

Additional Activities in Koh Tao

Koh Tao is packed with loads of fun things to do. Moreover, check out all of the scuba diving centres, and consider doing one of the fun dives if you have your license.

    Backpacking Thailand

    Where is Thailand?

Thailand is a large country in South East Asia, with many people referring to it as the heart of South East Asia.

Thailand has a large and widespread Northern region and then the Southern region reduces to a narrow peninsula dotted with islands on either side.

Finally, Thailand borders Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia. Therefore, making it an excellent location to do some further travelling within the South East Asian region.

    Is Thailand Good for Backpackers?

Thailand is an excellent location for backpackers including solo female travellers. Moreover, it’s a very cheap place to travel, it’s easy to get around and a lot of Thai people can speak English fluently.

Thailand is the perfect spot for a first-time traveller, especially those with no experience. You will bump into loads of other travellers or backpackers, there are plenty of great hostels and loads of awesome activities to take part in.

How Many Days Do You Need in Thailand?

Depending on how much time you have to spare, you could easily stay in Thailand for months. I spent about three months backpacking all around Thailand and could’ve stayed for much longer.

However, if you’re on a limited-time schedule, I’d recommend a minimum of 30 days to see the entire country. Moreover, this will ensure you hit all the best spots and still have time to enjoy the stunning country.

Nonetheless, this Thailand itinerary will give you a decent insight into how to spend one month travelling the entire country.

What Is the Best Way to Get around the Country?

There are numerous ways you can get around Thailand and these will vary depending on your budget. Firstly, if you have more time to spare, it might be best to consider public transport, buses and trains. These will be the cheapest options but take much longer to travel from place to place.

Secondly, you can make use of flights. Thailand has a total of 38 airports, with 6 being the main international airports. Therefore, there are loads of ways that you can get around and there are plenty of options for different flights.

How Much Money Do I Need per Day in Thailand?

A backpacker’s budget can vary from person to person, however, a good rule of thumb for backpacking in Thailand for 30 days includes a budget of $50 AUD per day.

Moreover, this budget will include food, travel, accommodation (hostels), entertainment, shopping etc. Additionally, some days you may spend more, while other days will be below budget. So, it’ll all balance out in the end and you should hit a reasonable budget.

Finally, the average dorm room price in a hostel is $12 AUD per night. Keep in mind, accommodation is usually one of the largest factors of travelling anywhere, so if you can stick to a budget of $12 or less, you will have no issue staying below a travel budget of $50 per day!

Tip: $1500 AUD should be the perfect amount of travel money to get around Thailand and do some exploring for 30 days. However, this doesn’t include the price of flights.

What Is the Best Time of Year to Visit Thailand?

The coolest time of year to visit Thailand is during November and April. Moreover, this is when the temperature is at the lowest for the year and will be the most comfortable.

Alternatively, if you don’t mind heat or humidity, anytime from May to October will be the warmest times of the year.

    Local Language and Currency

There are a few things that you should keep in mind when travelling around Thailand in terms of local language and currency. Firstly, they speak the language of ‘Thai’ and the currency used is Thai Baht.

Keep in mind, there are both coins and notes that are used and the notes are in the denominations of 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000.

Some conversions of the Thai Baht to the Australian Dollar are:

    20 baht: $0.9 AUD
    50 baht: $2.2 AUD
    100 baht: $4.40 AUD
    500 baht: $22 AUD
    1,000 baht: $44 AUD
    10,000 baht: $440 AUD

You’ll be glad to know that loads of Thais have incredibly fluent English and many of them want to continue practising English so they’ll have no problem chatting with you.

However, if you would like to speak a few words of Thai out of respect and to show some cultural interest, then I recommend noting some of the words listed below.

I strongly believe that any traveller should at least know how to greet and thank someone in their local language at the absolute bare minimum.

A few translations worth noting include:

    Hello: Sawadekha
    Thank You: Kap Khun Kha
    Please: Pord
Where is the bathroom?: Hong Nam Yu Tee Nai?
Yes / No: Chi / Lek Thi

    Visa Information

For the most part, many tourists will receive a 30-day free visa upon arrival to Thailand. Then, you can extend your visa for additional months if you would like to stay longer for more travel.

I advise looking into your visa requirements well before heading to Thailand.

    One Month Thailand Backpacking Route

Let’s dive into the ultimate one-month Thailand backpacking itinerary. Moreover, you can complete this in any direction and change the dates to suit your needs.

Furthermore, this is just a rough idea of the best journey to take if you want to see the entire country within 30 days. Therefore, if you have a longer timeframe, be sure to stretch out the days and enjoy some of the places for longer.

    Day 1 & 2: Bangkok

First up, you will arrive in Bangkok. Moreover, this is a great location to start as there are multiple international airports and it is the hub of Thailand. Besides, this makes for an excellent starting location on your Thailand itinerary.

I recommend staying somewhere within the Phra Nakhon suburb as this is where most backpackers tend to hang out and is an awesome spot to do some exploring for a day or so.

Get yourself settled in, try some Thai food and hit up Khao San Road before making the journey to Chiang Mai the following day.

Hostel recommendation: Khaosan Social Capsule Hostel

    Day 2, 3 & 4: Chiang Mai

If you have time to spare or you’re on a tight budget, the best way to reach Chiang Mai is via public bus. Moreover, the tickets are quite cheap and it will take about 10 hours to get to this Northern city. Book your bus tickets via 12go Asia!

Upon arrival in Chiang Mai, you’ll want to spend some time wandering the Old City, checking out the markets, enjoying the city and doing some exploring.

There are loads of incredible restaurants around here and there are plenty of things to do. I highly recommend checking out the night markets and the city cultural arts centre.

    Wat Chedi Luang, Chiang Mai

    Day 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8: Pai

The ultimate backpacker haven of Thailand is easily Pai. And, I strongly believe this location should be on the bucket list of your Thailand itinerary. Moreover, there are so many fun activities you can do, the hostels are fantastic and it’s a beautiful little hippy town.

One of the most popular activities that attract thousands of tourists year-round is tipsy tubing. Moreover, this activity involves drinking alcohol, while floating down the river on an inflatable tube. You will also get to party at the halfway point with local DJs and it’s an absolute blast!

Another excellent spot to check out is the Pai Canyon. And, this is the ultimate sunset spot in Pai. Snag a few of the freshly made spring rolls in the nearby stall, grab yourself a Leo or Chang and then head up to the canyon to watch the sun drop behind the mountains.

Finally, there are loads of awesome bars, restaurants and tonnes of other activities to enjoy in this charming little town. It just might become your favourite spot in Thailand!

    Hostel recommendation: Nolo Hub

    Pai Canyon

Day 8: Pai to Chiang Mai

Wave goodbye to the Pai hole and get yourself packed up for another day of travel. This time, we’re headed back to Chiang Mai to make way for travelling to Southern Thailand.

Spend this day enjoying a relaxing day making your way from town to town, and get yourself a comfortable place to stay the night before flying from Chiang Mai to Phuket.

Day 9: Chiang Mai to Phuket

Spend another day doing some exploring in Chiang Mai before getting ready to board a flight to Phuket. Moreover, this will be your only internal flight within Thailand, and it’s a good idea to do this if you’ve only got 30 days in Thailand.

When backpacking in Thailand, you won’t want to take too many internal flights as this will increase your spending limit exponentially. Therefore, limiting yourself to just one internal flight will help to keep the budget low!

    Day 10, 11 & 12: Khao Sok National Park

Next on the Thailand itinerary is to travel to Khao Sok National Park. Moreover, this national park is an absolute oasis. You’ll swear you’re in the middle of the ocean surrounded by islands, but you’re actually inland on a lake.

You can explore stunning waterfalls, and ancient rainforests, boat rides on the lake and stay in waterfront accommodation anywhere within the national park. It’s an incredible experience and many backpackers love the area.

    Day 12, 13, 14, 15 & 16: Phi Phi Islands

Yet another one of the most popular locations for holidayers, backpackers and travellers is to head to the Phi Phi Islands. This is an excellent spot to kick back for a few days and soak up island life.

You can do plenty of beach hopping, explore the different bays, and do some island hopping. I highly recommend checking out some of the viewpoints to enjoy the stunning scenery over the island and its surrounds.

    Phi Phi Islands

    Day 16, 17, 18, 19 & 20: Krabi

Next up on the Thailand itinerary is to make your way to Krabi. And, this spot has become an absolute favourite among Thailand backpackers.

However, when we talk about Krabi, we specifically mean heading to Railay Beach. Keep in mind, the only way you can access this little oasis is via boat ride. So, get yourself organised with a lift to that part of Krabi.

Finally, this is a lovely spot to enjoy the beaches, do some exploring of the caves and relax for a few days.

    Hostel Recommendation: Blanco Hideout Railay

    Day 20, 21 & 22: Koh Samui & Ang Thong Marine Park

Next on the agenda is to head over to Koh Samui. In all honesty, I think that Koh Samui is only good if you plan to head to resorts. I don’t think that the backpacker lifestyle is that great here.

However, the main reason you will want to come to this island is to reach Ang Thong National Marine Park. Moreover, this is an incredible space to enjoy snorkelling, diving, kayaking and swimming. Not to mention, there are 40 islands that you can explore and enjoy.

Feel free to check out some of the tour recommendations below and get yourself booked into one!

Hostel Recommendation: Lub D Koh Samui

    Day 22, 23, 24 & 25: Koh Pha Ngan

Named the party island of Thailand is the famous Koh Pha Ngan. And, it has this name for good reason as there are loads of awesome parties, including the full moon party, beach parties and jungle parties.

Not to mention, there are loads of stunning beaches, awesome beach bars and lovely places to hang out. I thoroughly enjoyed my time on this island exploring and relaxing at the beach.

If you plan on visiting, try to line it up with the full moon party as this is the largest monthly party that happens on the island. And, it attracts tens of thousands of visitors from all over the world.

    Day 25, 26, 27, 28 & 29: Koh Tao

After you’ve spent some time partying in Koh Pha Ngan, head to Koh Tao for some much need rest and relaxation. And, if you’ve ever considered getting your scuba license, now is a perfect time! Be sure to add this to your Thailand itinerary as it’s one of the best activities!

Koh Tao is one of the cheapest places in the world to get your open water license, and the course takes about four days to complete.

Personally, I recommend checking out Roctopus Dive as they were incredibly professional and supportive during the training process.

Furthermore, if you want to keep the party going, you might want to jump onto the Koh Tao Pub Crawl which takes you around to all of the best bars and is an absolute banger of a night.

    Day 29 & 30: Bangkok

To finalise the one-month in Thailand itinerary, you will land yourself back in Bangkok to make use of the international airport. Moreover, here you can head to other parts of Asia or make your way back home.

I highly recommend arriving in Bangkok at least one day before any flight (especially international) as you wouldn’t want to be caught up in delays or miss your flight!

Finally, finish up your time in Thailand by spending the remainder of your Baht, enjoying some Thai food and soaking up the last moments of Thailand before moving on to the next place.

    Wrapping Up

In conclusion, I hope this Thailand itinerary of what one month of backpacking can be, gives you a little bit of insight into how incredible and diverse the country is.

From scuba diving to beach parties, and temples to street food, there is so much that you can enjoy within this magnificent country. Besides, you can enjoy almost any activity and experience all types of landscapes within an incredibly short period of time.

I definitely think that this is a fantastic route if you’re on a limited-time schedule but want to see all the best parts of Thailand. You’ll have a jam-packed experience and see loads of awesome things.

Finally, if you’d like to discover more about Thailand and delve a little deeper, I have loads of posts on this section of my blog. Moreover, it includes travel advice, places to stay, awesome activities and things to do. Happy reading!

    Tips for Finding Vegan Food

There are a few travel tips you may like to keep in mind when it comes time to find vegan food in Chiang Mai or Thailand.

Firstly, I highly recommend getting your hands on the ‘Happy Cow’ app. Moreover, this is a useful platform to find some of the best vegan and vegetarian spots all over the world.

If you would like to find or ask for vegan/vegetarian food, you can ask for ‘mangsawerat’ which translates to vegetarian or ‘jey’ for vegan. Thai people will be impressed that you know this word and will have a clear understanding of what you’re looking for.

Finally, strike up a conversation with the person working in the restaurant. Thais are very familiar with vegan and vegetarian dietary preferences and are more than happy to accommodate them. Even when I wasn’t sure about the menu, I could ask for an item, and they were more than happy to make an absolute feast!

    Additional Activities in Chiang Mai

There are loads of awesome things that you can do while spending time in Chiang Mai. So, after you’ve fuelled up on some delicious vegan food, check out some of the guided tours in the area to have the ultimate day of exploring!

    ]]>
There is a massive range of things you need to know for scooter hire in Thailand. And, it pays to be prepared when hiring one of these vehicles as we are all aware of just how dangerous they can be!

Renting a scooter gives you an incredible amount of freedom and gives you the opportunity to explore a place far and wide, and at your own leisure. Besides, it’s a cheap way to travel and offers you a truly authentic experience of Thailand.

From safety tips to the process of renting a scooter in Thailand, these factors will be thoroughly discussed throughout the blog post. I want you to walk away feeling ready and confident to hire a scooter and get out on those adventures.

Besides, I have about six months of experience and have rented scooters all over parts of South East Asia. I’ve gotten to know the way things work and have hired my fair share of scooters.

So, let’s dive in and get you all worded up on everything you need to know about renting a scooter in Thailand!

How Much Does It Cost for Scooter Hire in Thailand?

Scooter hire rental price in Thailand changes a fair bit depending on your location. Moreover, the islands can be a little pricier and some of the cities tend to charge a little more. I tend to find it’s cheaper in the smaller towns.

For the most part, scooter hire in Thailand will set you back anywhere from 150-350 THB per day. And, you will get the scooter for an entire 24 hours, so plan the timing right to get the most out of the hire.

Therefore, do some research on your location and try to find the best deal so that you can get the lowest priced scooter.

Tip: You may get a discount if you ask to hire the scooter for a number of days. So, definitely have a chat with the store owner and see if something can be figured out. I would recommend hiring the scooter for at least a week to get some sort of discount if you plan to do a number of days worth of exploring.

Is It Safe to Ride a Scooter in Thailand?

Well… let’s be realistic, it is safe, but you can get yourself in some sticky situations. And, you need to keep in mind that it is one of the most dangerous methods of transport, but is also the most thrilling and freeing.

You can get to so many cool sights, and locations and do tonnes of exploring with the use of a scooter. Besides, some of my best days out were when I went on solo rides on my scooter. I couldn’t get enough of the wind in my hair and the freedom to go anywhere!

When it comes time for renting a scooter in Thailand there are plenty of ways that you can ride safely and responsibly on a scooter, so let’s dive into some of my best tips.

Tip: Ask the store owner for recommendations on the safest roads to drive. They may give you an idea of which roads to avoid and how to get around town safely.

Tips for Riding a Scooter Safely

Riding a scooter safely is absolutely crucial. Keep in mind, that these are very dangerous vehicles, and a simple mistake can result in absolute disaster.

Nobody wants an accident especially while travelling or on holiday, so let’s discuss some of the ways that you can ride safely.

    1. Always ride with a helmet and protective clothing/gear

I think this goes without saying, but you’d be surprised at how many people don’t wear the correct protective gear. It’s so easy to make a mistake or slide on some dirt, and if you come down, you can hit your head and do some damage.

Also, wearing protective clothing like long pants, long shirts and tied-up shoes will protect your skin from the sun and save you from dreaded gravel rash.

    1. Practice in an open space

Don’t jump onto your bike for the first time and head straight into traffic. Spend some time practising in a back street or a large open and safely sealed spot. Moreover, this gives you the chance to get comfortable with balance and gives you a feel for the bike and all of the controls.

This is the perfect time to practice braking, turning and using indicators.

    1. Lean the bike, not your body

Learn to lean correctly by tilting the bike and not your body when you take corners. This ensures a better centre of gravity and means that you will be less likely to fall off. However, do not sit awkwardly perpendicular to the road. Be sure to have a natural and smooth flow, it’s all in the hips!

Additionally, do not take corners quickly as you can slide very easily on sand. And, braking when taking corners is usually a bad idea.

    1. Take it slow in the beginning

There is absolutely no harm in driving slow, especially if you’re in a location that doesn’t have a lot of fast riders. So, take it slow and get the hang of riding around other drivers.

Besides, it can be pretty daunting and make you feel uncomfortable, so it’s best to start slow and gain confidence.

    1. Never become overly confident

After you’ve ridden a few times, it can be pretty easy to become overconfident and then result in making a mistake. Honestly, it can take years to become an excellent rider, and even then, they still make mistakes resulting in terrible injuries.

Sometimes, when people hire a scooter in Thailand, they get comfortable way too quickly and it can cause disaster! Always ride confidently, but stay aware of your surroundings.

    1. Avoid riding in the rain

One of the worst times to ride is during a rainstorm. The roads become incredibly slippery, rain hits your body hard (which hurts!) and visibility is terrible.

It’s honestly one of the worst times to ride and is much worse than riding in the dark. So, if you can, pull over and allow the rain to pass before jumping on the bike again.

    1. Be wary of the road rules

Before you jump on the bike, you should know the road rules, and which side of the road you need to drive on. If you aren’t aware of these, you could find yourself in some trouble pretty quickly.

So, take plenty of notice of how other riders are getting around, and try to follow suit as you gain more experience.

    1. Ride with a friend

If you have the option, I highly recommend that you ride or go on your day trip with a friend. This ensures that if you or the other person find yourself in danger, you are much more likely to get help faster.

Also, never take a passenger on the back of your bike if you don’t feel confident. This could be disastrous if two people get injured.

    Driving with an International License

It’s crucial to drive with an international license. And, if you get pulled over, you may be fined up to 1,000 THB for not having an international license.

However, for the most part, you won’t get pulled over often if you are wearing a helmet. Typically, the police tend to set up checkpoints, especially in Chiang Mai. And, they are quite visible, so you can usually turn around to avoid getting in trouble.

Nonetheless, applying for a license is always a good idea and ensures you have the correct license to ride on the roads.

However, you will need to organise an international driving license in your own country before heading overseas. This is near impossible to get ahold of once you’ve left to go overseas!

Tip: Do not give the police money as they are likely wanting a bribe. Sometimes, you can be given a fine, and they won’t chase it up!

How to Check If a Scooter Is Safe to Ride

There are many things you need to do to check if a scooter is safe to ride before jumping on. So, take note of all of these things to check:

    • Confident and genuine store owner: The store owner should be happy with you taking any of their bikes and should happily take you through anything you need to know.
    • Don’t pick a dodgy bike: A dodgy bike could result in disaster, if you need to spend a little more to get a safer ride, then do it! Better to spend an extra 100 THB on a bike than thousands in hospital bills.
    • Check store reviews online: A great way to see if the business operates fairly is to do a Google search of the shop. You’ll get an idea of their legitimacy of them and see past experiences in reviews.
    • Ask for a test ride: Most of the time, owners will be happy for you to do a test ride. This gives you the chance to see if everything runs smoothly and you can see if you are happy to hire it.

Now, in terms of actually doing checks on the bike, these are some of the things that you need to consider for scooter hire in Thailand:

    • Headlights: Do they turn on, are they broken?
    • Brake lights: Do they work? Are they bright enough and visible?
    • Indicators: Can other drivers/riders see me indicating?
    • Mirrors: How many mirrors are on the bike? Can you adjust them to see behind you?
    • Ignition: Does it turn on easily or are there some motor issues?
    • Handles: Is there enough grip?
    • Tires: Are they well-inflated? Do they have plenty of tread?
    • Brakes: Is it easy to brake? Are they responsive?
    • Acceleration: Is it responsive? Does it jerk uncomfortably?
    • Fuel: Check how much fuel is left in the tank and be sure to refuel accordingly, don’t get left stranded!
    • Seat: Does the seat unlock? Does it lock up securely?

Check out this website for some more safe riding tips.

    The Hiring Process

The hiring process is a significant and crucial aspect of scooter hire in Thailand. Moreover, knowing how this process is going to run is best to ensure you are entirely prepared.

Firstly, they are going to ask what you’re looking for. This is the right time to let them know where you’ll be heading so that you can get the correct type of bike. For smaller females, I recommend the smaller bikes like a ‘scoopy’, and for boys, you might want to consider getting a ‘click’.

Also, knowing how much power you need is important. You want to be able to make it up any steep hills if you decide to take it around some mountains, so that you don’t get stuck halfway.

Secondly, once they’ve figured out a bike for you, they’ll show you some options. Depending on how busy they’ve been, there might only be one bike available or there could be ten! Try to pick the best one suited for your needs and then go over the safety checks mentioned above.

Thirdly, once you’ve decided on a bike, it’s time to put a payment and deposit down. This is usually the chance to pay for your first day of hire and time to put some money down.

I DO NOT recommend handing over your passport as a deposit. If they lose it, you’re in trouble! I much prefer to put down a 2,000 THB deposit. Additionally, make some photocopies of your passport so that you can give them a paper copy and they will usually hand it back to you at the end of the hiring. Also, you will always receive your 2,000 THB deposit back in full, or they will take off any additional hiring days.

Last but not least, is to take images and or a video of the bike before you leave the shop. This is absolutely crucial as then you have photographic evidence of marks, scratches, ruined panels etc. Also, I recommend taking photos if there are any broken lights or warning lights that have come up.

Finally, scooter hire in Thailand is a reasonably easy process. Just keep the above things in mind and be sure to go with your gut feeling! If it feels too dodgy, then it probably is!

Tip: I recommend allowing a minimum of 30 minutes for the hiring process. It can sometimes be much quicker, but also can be longer. Be sure to add this time into your schedule if you have a busy itinerary.

Do I Recommend Hiring a Scooter in Thailand?

Personally, I believe, that if you feel comfortable, you should absolutely experience riding on a scooter in Thailand. However, you must have the confidence and knowledge to ride before getting on the road.

The first time I rode a scooter was in Vietnam, and I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face! I felt incredibly independent and free; It was truly an amazing experience.

Besides, scooters can take you to so many places and you can see so much of a country. I think it’s entirely worth it as long as you play by the rules and ride safely.

Finally, scooter hire in Thailand is well worth the experience, and I think everyone should give it a crack at least once in their life.

    Additional Ways to Get Around

    Walk

Walking is a great way to get around, especially if you are close to some sights or things around town. I don’t think it’s necessary to ride a scooter into town when you could simply go for a walk! Besides, this saves a lot of money on scooter hire in Thailand.

    Hire a Rider

Another great way to get around is to hire a rider on a scooter. This is one of the cheapest ways to get around and you can get to your location reasonably fast.

    Tuk Tuk or Taxi

Check out tuk-tuks and taxis for ways to get around cities or to go slightly further. These are reasonably affordable but can rack up a hefty bill if you use them to get around constantly.

    Public Transport

My favourite way to get around for long distances is by using public transport. Moreover, you can pay for some pretty cheap bus, train and ferry tickets and get around in no time!

    Wrapping Up

In conclusion, these are just some of my tips and things you should know before hiring a scooter in Thailand. Besides, a lot of it comes from experience and knowledge that you will pick up during your travels.

All in all, take the most notes from my safe riding section. This is the most important area to ensure you arrive at your location safely every time. After all, if you arrive 15 minutes late to something, it’s much better than having an accident and getting yourself into some trouble.

Finally, take it easy on the scooters in Thailand and practice heaps! There is nothing wrong with taking it slow and gaining experience and confidence.

Scuba diving in Koh Tao has to be one of the most incredible things you could ever experience. Imagine cruising underwater and getting the opportunity to swim with stingrays, anemones, clownfish, sea snakes, octopuses and so much more.

You truly won’t believe your eyes when exploring the magnificent dive sites off the coast of the island and there are some truly spectacular locations to visit. Not to mention, scuba diving in Koh Tao is one of the cheapest locations in the world. So, you’d be silly to pass up the offer!

Continue reading my insider’s guide for plenty of information on diving, courses and my personal experience diving on Koh Tao.

      What is Scuba Diving?

Scuba Diving is an experience in which a group of people wear a cylinder tank to supply oxygen while exploring underwater. Moreover, divers will wear eye masks, buoyancy control devices, cylinder tanks, regulators, fins and in cooler climates, wetsuits.

Scuba diving provides humans with the chance to spend a much longer period of time underwater than the typical freediving or snorkelling experience can provide. Besides, it’s a great way to explore deeper parts of the ocean and view life underwater.

      Where is Koh Tao?

Koh Tao is a small island in the South Eastern part of Thailand. Moreover, its much larger neighbours Koh Phangan and Koh Samui are also excellent locations to experience scuba diving.

Is Scuba Diving in Koh Tao Safe?

Yes! Scuba diving in Koh Tao is extremely safe! Of course, there are many safety measures that all divers need to keep in mind. However, if you follow the rules and stick with your instructor, you should have no issues diving safely.

Is Scuba Diving in Koh Tao Worth It?

I truly believe that Koh Tao has some of the best dive sites, especially in Thailand. I’ve completed a handful of dives, and the sites in Koh Tao are absolutely incredible!

I go into further detail later in the post about some of the dive sites, and what I recommend checking out.

How Much Does It Cost to Scuba Dive in Koh Tao?

On average, you’re looking at around 11,100 THB ($470 AUD) to complete your Open Water 20 certification. Furthermore, you can look at getting packages of 10 fun dives (once qualified) for around 8,000 THB ($338 AUD), which is an incredible deal!

For the most part, the majority of the schools on the island offer similar and competitive prices. Nonetheless, for the best deal, I recommend checking with your accommodation to see if they are affiliated with a dive school and can give you a discount.

Personally, I stayed with Summer Hostel and received a discount to complete my course with Roctopus. Not to mention, Koh Tao is one of the cheapest places in the world in which you can receive your license, so I highly recommend checking it out.

These are a couple of options for courses you can check out:

How to Pick a Diving School

Now it comes down to picking a dive school. This is actually very important and something I didn’t actually realise. Though, I was lucky that things worked out for me!

Firstly, you need to consider the size of the school. There are a couple of main diving schools on the island by the names of Big Blue and Ban’s. These courses include a lot of students and they go out in large groups.

Secondly, a smaller school may be the best bet if you prefer to receive one-on-one attention. Furthermore, if you feel as though you want to ask plenty of questions and receive lots of support, this is definitely the way to go.

I chose a smaller school (Roctopus) and loved the individual attention I could receive from my instructor. It made the diving experience much more comfortable.

What Is the Experience and Course Like?

The course is divided into four days and you will get a total of four dives in the open ocean. Depending on which company you do the course with, the pricing may vary slightly.

You will learn everything you need to know to become open-water certified and gain a qualification. Then, you can dive anywhere in the world to a total depth of 20 metres.

Furthermore, if you wish to increase your qualification, you can move on to do an advanced course, rescue courses etc.

For now, let’s discuss the breakdown of the course:

      Day One

The first day of the course is pretty simple. You will meet your diving instructor and buddies that you will be completing the course and dives with. My group consisted of my instructor and one other dive buddy.

This day usually begins at about 4:00 PM and you will go through some of the theory to learn how to dive. You will also get to know your instructor and buddies a little bit more and get to create a sense of team.

The academic session usually runs for about a couple of hours, and you will be sent home with some online homework. Keep in mind, you will need to read through lots of information and get 100% on all of the quizzes required. However, we were allowed to work together and discuss answers.

I really liked the fact that I had a small group as I could pick the brains of my instructor, ask plenty of questions and receive plenty of one-on-one help. I tend to get quite anxious, and this was a great way to receive heaps of support.

      Day Two

Day two begins a little earlier with some academics starting at around 8:00 AM. And, this is a great way to get the body clock ready for the upcoming dives. You will spend a couple of hours brushing up on the theory work and receive a little more homework for the night.

Next up, in the afternoon is the pool session. This is an excellent chance to practice with the gear and get comfortable breathing through the regulator underwater. Additionally, you will practice a few skills so that you are ready to swim in the ocean.

Finally, the pool session takes a couple of hours and you will walk away feeling much more prepared for the upcoming days. Now, the exciting part is just yet to begin!

      Day Three

It’s time to dive! Your instructor will go over the final bits of homework with you and ensure that you received 100% on all the theory work. And, this is an excellent time to ask any additional questions that you may need.

Furthermore, you will also go through some hand signals, and your instructor should test you on these so that you are up to scratch.

Now it’s time to jump on board the boat and head to the first dive site. This is where the fun begins! You will descend to a depth of about 10m and do some practice of the skills with your instructor.

This includes half flooding the mask, completely flooding the mask, taking out your regulator, taking off the weight belt, removing your buoyancy control device and sharing a spare regulator with your buddy.

Once your instructor is happy with your skills, you will get the chance to go for a swim and explore some of the underwater world. This is the best part of the dive and it feels so freeing!

After about a 40-minute dive, you will begin a slow ascent and then rest for a little while before completing dive number 2.

      Day Four

The final day of the course is the absolute best part. Moreover, you will get up bright and early, head to the dive store and then make your way to the boat for the final two dives.

These are fun dives, and you get to explore two incredible dive sites before finalising your course. So, as long as your instructor is happy with your performance, you should receive your open water certification and be free to dive with a buddy anywhere in the world!

The day ends with some celebratory drinks and receiving of certificate. A fantastic way to finish the course!

      Learning New Skills

      Breathing Methods

Breathing methods are a skill you will learn in the pool. And, this is the perfect time to practice getting comfortable with the regulator. A constant natural flow of breathing in and out is crucial for safe diving.

Therefore, you should never hold your breath at any time of the dive! This can be extremely dangerous and your instructor will go into more detail.

      Buoyancy Control

Buoyancy control is also a part of breathing methods. Think of it this way, our lungs are like a floating device in our own bodies. When we breathe in we can float, and when we exhale we can sink.

This is a crucial skill to master as you will need to be able to use your buoyancy to float over reefs, rocks, aquatic life, urchins and so much more. A simple inhale can help you to glide over the top of a set of reef.

      Hand Signals and Communication

Knowing how to communicate underwater is insanely crucial. Especially when you need to get a message across quickly. Pay lots of attention to the hand signals and practice them heaps before going underwater.

Nonetheless, you’d be surprised just how easy it is to communicate underwater. You can really get a lot across from very simple body language techniques.

      Equalising

One of the worst parts of descending into the water is equalising. Moreover, this is a method to equalise your ears as you descend that avoids building pressure in your ears.

The method for equalising includes squeezing the tip of your nose and then softly blowing through the nose. This pops the pressure and helps your ears to adjust. If you find it much too difficult, head up a couple of metres as the pressure will reduce.

Tip: Never scuba dive with a cold. Having a cold makes it insanely hard to equalise and it can be a really painful process!

      Reading Air Levels

Reading air levels is another critical process that must be conducted consistently throughout the dive. You will need to check your air levels and then communicate them with the instructor so that they know how much longer you can spend underwater.

      Looking Out For Your Buddy

At all times of the dive, keep an eye out for your buddy and check in that they’re doing okay. Supporting each other underwater is crucial to ensure a smooth dive. And, it creates a sense of team!

      Types of Diving Licenses

There is a range of licenses that you can apply for, but you have to begin with the Open Water 20 Course. Moreover, these are some of the licenses and what you can do with them (In order):

      • Open Water 20: Dive to a total depth of 20m
      • Advanced Open Water 30: Dive to a total depth of 30m, this is best for exploring shipwrecks
      • Rescue Diver: Learn to respond to underwater emergencies
      • Divemaster: Become an instructor and lead diving classes

      Diving Sites on Koh Tao

Now it’s time to discuss dive sites on Koh Tao. Besides, there’s a massive range of them, it can be a little hard to pick which ones you want to do especially if you’re only booked in for a couple of fun dives.

I completed four dives which included Japenese Garden, Red Rock, Chumphon and Hin Pee Wee. Each of these was incredible, but my favourites were Chumphon and Red Rock.

Some of the most popular diving sites on Koh Tao include:

      • Chumphon Pinnacle
      • Three Rocks
      • Japanese Garden
      • Mango Bay
      • White Rock
      • Hin Pee Wee

Tip: Ask the dive school which dive they recommend completing. And, it’s usually best to book the dive site early in the morning, the day of. Considering, the weather can change drastically in Koh Tao and visibility may be ruined if the ocean decides to take a turn.

      Tips for Scuba Diving

There are so many things you could take away from this post, but here are a few of my tips for scuba diving that I’ve learnt along the way:

      • Learning to remain calm and focus on your breathing is crucial
      • Always dive with an instructor and buddy that you feel comfortable with
      • Stick with your buddy and instructor at all times
      • Never dive when feeling sick. A cold is the worst time to dive!
      • Drink lots of water before your dive. It’s incredible how dehydrated you can become
      • For those with long hair, make sure it is secured in a very high bun or low braid. Keeping your hair out of the way is very important for safety measures.
      • A soapy water rinse inside of your eye mask is a great way to prevent fogging

My Personal Diving Experience with Roctopus Dive School

I completed my course with Roctopus Diving School, and to say they were fantastic throughout the entire process is the very least I could tell. I also stayed at Summer Hostel which meant that I got a discount of 1000 baht off the total price of my course.

My instructor’s name was Sean, and he was extremely thorough with teaching my dive buddy and me, insanely patient, understanding and supportive. I had a fantastic time learning about the underwater world and discovering the beauty of Koh Tao.

I learnt plenty of important skills and feel like a much more confident diver than I thought I would ever be. And, now I feel like I have the knowledge to dive anywhere in the world. Scuba diving in Koh Tao is an incredible experience that I think everyone needs to try at least once!

I highly recommend checking out Roctopus diving school. It was a fantastic experience that I’ll always be grateful for.

Finally, check out Roctopus Diving School here for more information and a place to book your dives.

Do I Recommend Diving in Koh Tao?

Koh Tao is known for having some of the best diving sites in the world, and though I haven’t had a lot of experience, I’d have to say that it was incredible.

There is a huge range of fish and aquatic creatures that I’d never seen before, the reef was stunning and the water was comfortable and warm.

If you are visiting this island and are interested in diving, I would simply tell you to bite the bullet and go for it. It’s an amazing experience and I truly believe that it was worth every cent!

Discover the many ways on how to get to the beautiful island that is Koh Phangan. Furthermore, I will go into plenty of detail about each way you can reach the island so that you can choose the route best suited to you!

Not to mention, I’ll give you an idea of pricing and how you can suit the travel routes best to your budget. Believe me when I say that there is a way for everyone to do some island hopping while on a backpacker’s budget!

So, let’s dive in and get you to Koh Phangan as soon as possible!

How to Get to Koh Phangan

There are a handful of ways in which you can reach Koh Phangan. And, I’m going to go into a decent amount of detail so that you can pick the best route possible.

Not to mention, I’ve given information on how to reach the island from neighbours Koh Samui and Koh Tao and also if you were coming from Bangkok. Moreover, this gives the most popular routes and the typical ways in which people head to the island.

Tip: I recommend booking well in advance, especially before the Full Moon Party. This is when ferries may become more expensive as tens of thousands of people flock to the island for the monthly party.

Does Koh Phangan Have an Airport?

No, there is no airport for Koh Phangan, so there is no way that you can fly into the island. However, they are trying to develop an airport on the island and considering this is one of Thailand’s hottest tourist locations, I think it would be a worthwhile idea.

Unfortunately, the only way to actually reach Koh Phangan is by ferry or boat. Sorry for those of you that get seasick!

Nonetheless, if you hate long ferry rides, you could fly to Koh Samui’s airport and then take the ferry from there. But please take note that this is one of the most expensive but fastest ways to reach the island.

        Bus and Train Rides

The most popular way to reach Koh Phangan is via bus and train rides. There are loads of train and bus routes running from all parts of Thailand so that visitors have a way to reach the island.

Additionally, there are a handful of companies that take travellers to the island. Moreover, some of these companies include Lomprayah, Montanatip and Kruangsim. These buses are large and comfortable and great for a 10hr journey.

        Reaching Koh Phangan by Ferry

The only way to reach Koh Phangan is via ferry or boat. Besides, there are a number of options for routes and ways to get to the island which I discuss next in the section.

Upon arrival at Koh Phangan, you will land at Thongsala Pier. Moreover, this is when you will be bombarded with local taxi drivers offering to take you to where you need to go. If you are staying in a hostel, try and join up with a few others to reduce the price of the taxi.

Nonetheless, there are a few hostels within walking distance of the pier, so you may have gotten lucky and don’t need a taxi!

        Ferry Routes

        Koh Samui to Koh Phangan

Make your way to the Nathon Pier and board the ferry ready to make your way to Koh Phangan. Moreover, this is a direct ferry ride and is one of the closest destinations to reach the island.

You will be looking at a 1-hour journey on a typical ferry, or a 30-minute ride on one of the high-speed boats. Pricing is between 400 and 600 THB. Finally, be sure to book a seat well in advance.

        Koh Tao to Koh Phangan

The ferry from Koh Tao to Koh Phangan runs regularly and is another great way to get to the island. Moreover, many people island-hop from Samui to Phangan and then over to Tao.

Nonetheless, this route is reasonably quick and you will be looking at around a 1-hour journey on one of the high-speed boats or ferries. And, you will need to spend around 520 THB on a ticket for a one-way journey.

Keep in mind, this is the only way you can reach Koh Phangan from Koh Tao. So, be sure to book in advance especially if it’s high season!

When I took this route, I got stuck on one of the slower ferries. Which in turn took around 3 hours to reach the island. It was a very slow process, but we got there safely nonetheless. Keep this in mind when booking tickets and go for the faster option if it’s available.

        Bangkok to Koh Phangan

There are a couple of ways in which you can reach Koh Phangan from Bangkok. Firstly, the most expensive, but fastest option would be to fly to Koh Samui and then catch the ferry from Samui to Koh Phangan. You would be looking at about 5 hours of travel time.

Alternatively, you can catch a bus and ferry which is the cheaper option but takes much more time. A bus runs from Bangkok down to Surat Thani. And then, you will need to jump on the ferry to make it to Koh Phangan. This is roughly a 15-hour journey.

Travellers on a budget should definitely use the second option. Personally, I took the bus and found it to be a long and comfortable journey. We had one stop halfway through and got 30 minutes to eat some food, and drink and head to the bathroom before continuing our ride.

Where to Book Bus, Ferry and Train Tickets?

The main platform I recommend to book ferry, train and bus tickets is 12go Asia! Moreover, this website always has reliable options and there are loads of different routes and companies to choose from.

Furthermore, each option shows a breakdown of the pricing, your starting and finishing location and what the journey will involve. This is a great way to have an idea of what the journey will be like so that you can be ultimately prepared.

Things to Do in Koh Phangan

There are heaps of fun activities and things to do in Koh Phangan. It’s really that island that has some of the best activities and can attract visitors from all walks of life.

Some of the best things to do in Koh Phangan include:

        • Explore the beaches
        • Head to the Full Moon Party (Or Half Moon Party)
        • Visit the beach bars
        • Wander through Phantip Market

Where to Stay in Koh Phangan

There are many fantastic places that you can stay in Koh Phangan, however, these are some of my recommendations.

        1. Arena Hostel $

Arena Hostel is a great option, especially if you are gearing up to go to the Full Moon Party. Keep in mind, this is a party hostel, so things get pretty wild.

There are loads of social activities, a pool, a dance floor and DJs and so much more happening. I think this is a great place to crash while getting ready for the Full Moon Party.

        1. B52 Resort $$

B52 is the ultimate relaxation location especially fantastic for couples. Moreover, it’s part of a resort, which is simply stunning!

Not to mention, there are fantastic facilities and the resort is beachfront. An awesome place to enjoy for a few days!

        1. Varivana Resort $$$

Enjoy ultimate luxury at the Varivana Resort. There is a stunning infinity pool and you can look out at breathtaking views over the greenery of palm trees.

The mountainous views are gorgeous and you can enjoy dinner with a sunset on the rooftop restaurant.

        Wrapping Up

In conclusion, there are a handful of ways how to get to Koh Phangan. And, I hope that you found this useful and that it fixed any confusion or worries that you may have had in reaching the island.

The main thing that I would recommend is booking your tickets early and being aware of when the Full Moon Party is on. Considering this, it will change the prices of ferries and accommodation drastically and prices will be hiked to the max.

Finally, be sure to take note of the information used and save this post for later reading if you plan to visit Koh Phangan at a later date.

The beaches in Koh Phangan are some of the absolute best in Thailand. Imagine soft white sand, clear blue water, incredible snorkelling locations, and palm-lined beaches. Sounds like paradise right?

I spent about a week in Koh Phangan and had so much fun exploring the beautiful beaches and finding new ‘secret’ locations. And, now, I think it’s only fair to share my discoveries with the rest of the world.

Be sure to go through the entire guide to avoid missing some of the incredible locations. Truly, these beaches are like stepping foot into paradise and you wouldn’t want to miss out on any of them!

Besides, you are absolutely spoilt for choice. There is a tonne of gorgeous beaches on this island just waiting for you to discover!

          Is Koh Phangan Worth Visiting?

Koh Phangan is one of those places that you might not expect to be worth it but absolutely is. The island offers the perfect mix of party life, social activities, relaxation and of course, stunning beaches.

There are heaps to enjoy on this magnificent island and it’s become a favourite among many tourists. If you are considering stopping by the island, I totally recommend that you do so!

          Where is Koh Phangan?

Koh Phangan is a beautiful island off the South East coast of Thailand. Moreover, it makes up a significant part of the Chumphon Archipelago and is situated in the Gulf of Thailand.

Better known for its monthly full moon party, the island is a massive hit amongst tourists and brings in anywhere from 30,000 to 70,000 visitors monthly. And, that number is on a rapid incline considering the popularity of the festival event.

Finally, Koh Phangan is in the middle of its siblings, the larger Koh Samui and the smaller Koh Tao. It’s an excellent location to island hop and explore while enjoying the islands of Thailand.

The 10 Best Beaches in Koh Phangan You Need to Visit

          1. OXA Beach

Okay, so this isn’t technically just a beach… it’s actually a nightclub. Or, I guess you could say, party on the beach. And in all honesty, I think that this is one of the ultimate places to hang out for an afternoon before the night turns wild.

This area of the beach is an absolute dream. Think beautiful beach huts, gorgeous sunset views, hammocks for relaxing and strings of decorations hanging from trees. It’s honestly like stepping foot in paradise and I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw this location.

So enjoy the sunset on the beach, and sip on a few beers as the space comes to life!

          1. Secret Beach

It may not be so secret anymore, but in all honesty, that’s for good reason. Secret Beach has to be one of the most beautiful locations on the island and a wonderful spot to enjoy for a handful of hours.

There are a few restaurants lining the beach and you can enjoy a delicious meal while soaking up the sun; It truly feels like an absolute dream!

Not to mention, the food along the beach is incredible and I highly recommend grabbing a bite while you’re up this way!

          1. Zen Beach

They don’t call it Zen Beach for no reason! Zen Beach is a little bit tucked away, but opens up to a large area of soft sand and stunning views. Moreover, there’s plenty of room to perch up and enjoy some time in the sun.

Keep in mind, this spot becomes ultra busy just before sunset, so arrive early to save yourself a spot on the sand!

          1. Koh Ma Beach

Koh Ma is a fascinating location on the very northwest of the island. It’s one of the most northern points and is a beautiful spot to enjoy for a couple of hours. Imagine a large sand bank running in between the water and connecting a small island.

Unfortunately, loads of plastic debris tend to wash up on this part of the island, so if you can do your bit to help and clear some trash up, you will be doing the world of a difference!

Finally, while you’re in the area, feel free to wander on down to Mae Haad Beach for an added bonus. Moreover, this spot is just as beautiful and is another great location to relax for the afternoon. Besides, two in one is an absolute win!

          1. Salad Beach

When I tell you that Salad Beach is a dream, you best believe it! Salad Beach has some of the whitest sand on the island and is a gorgeous long stretch of beach with plenty of space to sprawl out.

Not to mention, it’s become one of the most popular beaches on the island and is an absolute must-visit while in Koh Phangan!

However, take note, if you are heading to this location and not staying at one of the resorts, it can be a little tricky to reach. Therefore, I recommend heading down by Ben’s Ice cream or Coral Beach shop to reach the beach!

          1. Srithanu Beach

Get two beaches in one trip by parking in the Zen Beach parking lot, visit Zen Beach and then head on down to Srithanu Beach. Besides, this beach is a little tricky to access as there are a number of resorts lining the shore making access a little difficult.

Additionally, this beach is still a little under the radar as a lot of tourists find it tricky to reach. So, enjoy it while you can before the crows flock to the location!

          srithanu beach
          1. Chalok Lam Beach

Chalok Lam Beach is much further away from the main strip of Koh Phangan but is absolutely worth a visit. Moreover, the northern beach is the best location for a few hours in the stunning Thai sun. However, there are a lot of long-tail fishing boats hanging around, so keep an eye out for them as they approach the shorelines.

Nonetheless, the sand is extremely soft and perfectly white, and the beach sits inside a bit of a cove. Therefore, you get gorgeous views of the mountains lining the beach.

          1. Thong Nai Pan Beach

Now, this is what stepping foot in paradise feels like. It’s named for being one of the best beaches in Koh Phangan, and it’s pretty clear to see why.

Thong Nai Pan Yai is one of those ultra-idyllic locations that look like it’s out of a movie, except, it’s real! The water is crystal clear, the sand is perfectly soft and white and the palms lining the beach look absolutely fantastic.

Besides, this is the perfect location to hang out if you want to escape craziness and enjoy some peace. So, be sure to add this one to your list! It’s not one to miss! This was one of my favourite hang out locations on the island.

          1. Haad Yuan Beach

This is one of the beaches on the island that requires a little more effort to reach. But, that’s what makes it so worth it! There are only two ways to reach this hidden paradise.

Firstly, you can hike from Haad Rin Beach which is about a 3.5km journey. However, there is some steep jungle hiking required.

Secondly, you can take a taxi boat which will set you back around 300 THB per person. Personally, I recommend hiking to the location and then taking a boat ride back. That way you get the full experience and get to enjoy an adventure to a secret beach location.

Finally, the beach is absolutely stunning and a beautiful spot to relax for a few hours. Nonetheless, be sure to take plenty of cash (Thai Baht) so that you can order some food and pay for a taxi to get back to the main part of the island.

          1. Haad Rin Beach

Did you really think that I could write this entire post and not put up the most popular beach on the island? Absolutely not, I couldn’t resist! Besides, Haad Rin Beach is one of the main reasons for Koh Phangan’s incredible tourism.

Haad Rin Beach is where the world-renowned Full Moon Party takes place every month. So, that means that this location is set up for some pretty great times all year round.

Besides, even if you don’t want to get involved in the Full Moon fun, it’s nice to experience the beach that hosts tens of thousands of partygoers monthly.

Nonetheless, Haad Rin is a very pretty beach, and there are some great sites around the beach that make up this quirky little area. There are many wild nights that have taken place on this beach and it’s absolutely worth a visit.

          Additional Activities in Koh Phangan

Find it hard to sit still? That’s okay, there are still numerous ways that you can enjoy these gorgeous beaches, but just with a little more adventure.

Feel free to check out some of the activities and methods of transport below.

          Doing Your Bit

If there’s one thing I’d like you to take from this post, it’s the fact that you can make a difference. While spending time along these idyllic beaches, you’ll unfortunately notice loads of plastic and waste floating in the water and sitting along the shoreline.

I would recommend taking the time to pick up even just a few pieces of rubbish/trash and taking them with you to dispose of thoughtfully. At the end of the day, a little goes a long way.

Additionally, ways that we can reduce the issue is by limiting our plastic consumption. Therefore, try doing your best to reduce how much plastic you pick up from stores and when receiving takeaway. There are many ways we can stop the issue, but it begins with us!

Finally, educating the locals is another great way to get to the bottom of the issue. Some of them don’t really understand the issue, but if we can kindly educate them, this is another great way to start!

Furthermore, offer alternatives and find new ways to say no to plastic.

          Wrapping Up

In conclusion, these are just some of the best beaches in Koh Phangan, but some of the prettiest places I saw while spending time on the island. Besides, half the fun of travelling is stumbling upon a hidden gem that no one knows about.

I absolutely recommend trying to visit at least five of these locations while spending time on the island. They are truly beautiful, and the most perfect spots to unwind for a bit.

Nonetheless, these are just some of the most stunning beaches in Koh Phangan, and better yet, Thailand in general! There are tonnes of places that you can enjoy, but this island sure packs an absolute punch!

If you weren’t sure whether this island was worth a visit, let it be known that it will knock your socks off! It’s truly an unskippable location for any and all travellers.

            ]]>
We are all aware that it can be difficult to make friends, so how do you make friends while traveling solo? Well, fear not, there is a huge range of ways in which you can make plenty of new friends!

Not to mention, this is advice from a solo female traveller who has experienced making friends while traveling solo on a first-hand basis.

Making friends while traveling solo can be a little tricky to start off with, but once you get the ball rolling you’ll have no problem meeting heaps of new people. Besides, it’s not as scary as you think, and you’ll have it figured out in no time.

So, continue reading for all my advice on how to make friends, the benefits of traveling solo, and plenty more travel advice!

Is It Easy to Make Friends While Traveling Solo?

Surprisingly enough, yes it is. Think of it this way, every other traveler is in the same position as you, and everyone just wants to make a new friend. Especially when traveling a new country.

Sometimes, a new friendship can blossom with a simple ‘hello’. And, of course, don’t forget to be your friendliest self. Another way to make friends easily is to offer your name, this gives the chance for a new conversation to open and new friendships to make way.

Furthermore, if you see someone sitting alone, offer them to join you. You may be the difference between someone making their first travel friend and them feeling lonely.

Finally, don’t be afraid to be the first person to approach another solo traveler or a group. Everyone is in the same position of feeling a little nervous to meet others, so be that person that makes the first move! You may just come upon a new best friend!

            Benefits of Traveling Solo

There are a huge range of benefits of traveling solo, and in all honesty, the biggest benefit is that you make more friends. I know it seems a little contradicting that travelling without a friend equals more friends, but its a proven fact!

For the most part, people that travel with a friend or with a group are much less likely to meet other travelers. They tend to stick with their friend and don’t feel the need to go too far out of their way to meet other people as they already have someone with them.

So, when traveling solo, you’re much more likely to make new friends which is a huge plus!

Another benefit of traveling solo is that you never have to worry about pleasing anyone else. Sure, you’ve made some new friends, but you don’t have to do the same activities as them. Say for example, they want to relax at the pool for the day, but you want to go for a hike; It’s easy to part ways and do your own thing for the day!

Traveling solo gives you the freedom that traveling with a group or friends doesn’t. Besides, you’re still going to make plenty of friends, it just requires a little more confidence.

Don’t Be Afraid to Go Alone

Sometimes, your own company is where it’s at. And, once you start enjoying being by yourself, you won’t be phased by hanging out with people all the time.

I discovered this pretty quickly and was impressed at how much I enjoyed my own company while traveling. I genuinely thought that I’d always need a friend nearby to enjoy every activity, but that wasn’t the case at all.

So, if all else fails, learn to love your own company! Because in reality, it’s likely that you’re not going to have a friend everywhere you go. There will be times when you need to do day trips by yourself or go on your own adventures and that’s totally fine.

Besides, that’s part of the beauty of traveling solo. You’re always likely to have new friends just around the corner, but you can also simply enjoy the comfort of your own company.

How to Make Friends While Traveling

Stay In Hostels or Dorm Rooms

One of the easiest and most fool-proof way to make friends while traveling is to stay in hostels or dorm rooms. Besides, this is usually the cheapest way for a solo traveler to explore, and the most sought after option.

However, I recommend getting to know the different types of hostels. When I began travelling I didn’t know that there was such a thing. But, lo and behold, there are all kinds of hostels. From adventure, social, party, budget, flashpacking, boutique and so much more.

Nonetheless, I find it’s best to stick to social, budget and party hostels. Moreover, these usually have the best social spaces and people are there to make new friends.

Besides, making a friend can be as easy as walking into your dorm room for the first time. Backpackers are usually friendly people and will happily greet you upon arrival. Sure enough, you’re bound to make new friends!

Tip: Ask new acquaintances what is happening during the day or nighttime. Moreover, this may give an insight into some of the activities that they may be considering which could lead to an invitation.

            Hang Out in Common Areas

Rolling over from my last tip, this leads me to my next point which is hanging out in common areas. So, if your hostel has a hangout space, this is the perfect spot to meet other people.

Moreover, this may look like a pool, rooftop area, games room or simply just a space with tables and chairs. Feel free to wander to those spaces and try to get included with some people who are hanging out.

            Talk to Hostel Workers

Okay, so maybe the hostel you’ve picked isn’t the greatest spot for socialising and there are not many people staying in your dorm. Additionally, you’re new to the small town and you aren’t sure of where all the tourists go.

This is the perfect opportunity to chat with the hostel workers and ask what the most popular activities are. Moreover, this will give you an idea of where tourists frequent, so it’ll give you the chance to meet other travellers.

Besides, this is a handy way to get around town and learn more about the location you’re visiting. There are many times that I’ve rocked up to a dead hostel and had to make my way out to meet other travellers.

Tip: I recommend only booking a 2-night stay at each hostel. Moreover, this gives you the chance to see if you enjoy the location, room, social spaces and vibe of the hostel. Then, if you dislike the space, you can move on to something else in the area.

Go on Public or Group Tours

One of my favourite ways to make friends is through public and group tours. Moreover, you will be spending anywhere from a couple of hours to possibly days with the same group of people, so you’re bound to make some friends.

Tours are excellent as they’re aimed at travelers wanting to see more of a place. Additionally, you can do your own tour with friends from a hostel. Moreover, this is a great way to meet more people and include others on a day trip.

            Put Yourself Out There

I know that it can be hard to get out of your comfort zone, but hey, you’re already traveling solo and you’ve come so far! Simply putting yourself out there and introducing yourself first is an excellent way to make a new friend.

I recommend going somewhere solo like a bar and being open to meeting strangers. You never know when a conversation may strike, and you might just make a new friend!

Besides, this is one of the best tips on how to make friends while traveling. Simply being yourself and feeling confident in your approach means you’re already on your way to new travel friends!

Tip: Smile at other people and feel free to introduce yourself to others. Moreover, this is a great way to get out of your comfort zone and possibly make a new friend.

            Make Use of Facebook Groups

Facebook groups are another great way to meet travellers. I recommend researching for groups by looking at the name of a town or country that you’re visiting. Besides, you may meet people who are just about to fly into the country or people that have been in and around for a while.

Moreover, this gives you the chance to make some friends online with the chance of hanging out in person. However, sometimes it can be a little tricky to link up, and you need to be wary of who you are meeting on the internet.

Not to mention, these are excellent ways to discover more things to do in the place that you are visiting. So, even if you don’t make a new friend, you might find an activity that you really want to complete or a place that you’d like to visit!

            Chat with Locals

Another great way to make friends is to chat with the locals. Moreover, people are extremely friendly and the locals will give you plenty of tips on great places to visit.

A way of making friends with locals includes getting to know some of the local language. Nonetheless, one of the most widely spoken languages is English. However, some countries speak very little English.

Learning simple phrases like ‘hello’, ‘my name is’ and ‘how are you?’ are great ways to converse with locals.

Tip: Aim to do this research prior to leaving for your trip and have the phrases written down so that you can look over them when you need to. I had them on the lock screen on my phone when learning, so that I had quick access to them and could ensure I was saying things correctly.

how to make friends while traveling

            Dating Apps

This one may seem a little strange and won’t exactly work for those of you in relationships, however, hear me out. Dating apps are a great way to meet other travellers as you can meet people who aren’t staying in the same hostels as you, but are in a similar area.

Not to mention, Bumble has a ‘BFF’ option where you can make new friends! This is an excellent option for people in relationships as it’s not a ‘dating’ platform as such.

Nonetheless, stay vigilant when meeting with people from the internet and always meet them in a public place. You never really know whose behind the screen, and I recommend that you use normal safety measures to keep yourself safe!

            Local Restaurants, Cafes and Bars

One place you’re bound to find other travellers is at local cafes, restaurants and bars. Think of it this way, where would you be most likely to hang out? At a bar? Well then check out a few bars or cafes in whichever restaurant you’re in and try to meet some people.

Besides, this is the perfect opportunity to share some delicious food over some funny travel stories with some new friends that you’ve just made.

            Friends of Friends

An easy way to make a handful of new pals is through other friends! Of course, this means that you need to have already established some friends before this can happen, but you’d be surprised as to just how quickly it can happen.

Say, for example, you might meet a couple of people in your dorm room, who then invite you out to dinner with some of their other friends. Before you know it, your friends are multiplying and you’re getting to know heaps of people!

How to Stay in Touch with Friends While Traveling

We are blessed with communication methods and social apps these days, and we have plenty of ways in which we can stay in touch with our new friends.

Tip: Don’t bother getting anyone’s mobile number as most of the time people are just using travel sims. Besides, these sims get thrown away when leaving the country therefore meaning you may have lost contact with your friend.

            Instagram

Instagram is one of the most popular ways to keep in touch with travel friends, and it’s my recommended platform. Moreover, you can see where your other travel friends are when they post stories and images, and you can stay up to date with their travels.

Besides, there is plenty of opportunity to continue the friendship even when going separate ways as you support them on their travels and chat with them via direct messages.

This is my favourite platform for keeping in touch with friends and I’ve managed to meet up with heaps of friends again while travelling as I saw they were in an area nearby.

            Whatsapp

A popular way for travelers to communicate is Whatsapp. Moreover, Whatsapp is an excellent free app to make voice and video calls, and of course, send messages.

You’ll discover that plenty of travellers use Whatsapp to connect with others and it’s worthwhile downloading before you set off on your adventures!

Not to mention, this is an excellent and free way to connect with family and friends back at home.

            Facebook

Facebook is yet another fantastic way to stay connected with other travellers, though it’s typically the least used. Moreover, the social platform is commonly used just to send messages and make voice and video calls.

So, feel free to add your new friends on Facebook to connect with them at a later date!

Personal Experience of Making Friends While Traveling Solo

I ventured out on my first ever six-month solo travel journey in 2022. And, to say that I was feeling all the feels is an absolute understatement. I was nervous, excited and scared, I wasn’t sure what awaited me, but I was ready to experience it all!

However, I made my first travel friend in a hostel in Vietnam. I stayed at Nexy Hostel and found plenty of other friendly travellers staying in the dorm rooms. This quick chat in the dorm room lead to greater things as I made numerous more friends, got invited to nights out, and was invited to join other friends in Phong Nha.

It was pretty spectacular that just one friendship could lead to that much, but I was entirely grateful for it. Besides, I think that the main thing was that I was open to meeting people and ready to go along for the ride.

So, take my advice, and get comfortable with saying yes to new things. It can be daunting, but it might just change your life!

            Wrapping Up

In conclusion, these are just some of the best methods on how to make friends while traveling. Besides, there are plenty of other ways you can make friends. But, the main way is to simply be open to new things!

Soon, you’ll discover that it isn’t very difficult to make friends while traveling, and before you know it, you’ll know everyone in and around the area!

There are a handful of beautiful waterfalls in Pai just waiting to be discovered. And, these waterfalls offer some of the best swimming locations in the stunning mountainous countryside of Pai.

For the most part, these waterfalls require a fair bit of effort with long hikes to reach the destination. Nonetheless, the serenity of being deep in the jungle while enjoying a gorgeous waterfall is quite a beautiful experience.

With your time in Pai, I recommend visiting at least a couple of these waterfalls as they are truly a fantastic daytime adventure activity. I thoroughly enjoyed exploring these falls and found them to be some of the best in Thailand.

Continue reading for some additional Pai travel tips, waterfall information and a handful of other things that you need to ensure you have the ultimate visit!

              Where is Pai?

Pai is in the North Western region of Thailand. Moreover, it is a part of the Mae Hong Song region and is an extremely rural town.

Additionally, the largest closest town to Pai is Chiang Mai. However, this is still roughly a 3-4 hour drive with a wild 762 turns needed to reach the town.

The most common way to reach Pai is via minivan. You can purchase a 200 THB ticket from 12Go Asia! to reach Pai from Chiang Mai on a budget. However, I highly recommend booking in advance, as tickets tend to sell out fast.

              Is Pai Worth Visiting?

Pai has become an absolute haven for many backpackers and travellers alike. And, it’s become one of the most popular destinations for younger travellers in Thailand.

Even though the town is in the furtherest corner of Thailand, it’s an absolute gem of a place and many people love visiting this location time and time again.

So, do I think Pai is worth visiting? Yes, absolutely! It is my all-time favourite location in Thailand, and I could get away with spending months there. Besides, there are loads of activities to enjoy and the town has the most incredible hippy and laid-back vibe.

How Long Should You Stay In Pai?

There’s a saying that goes around Thailand about this little country town, and it’s called a ‘Pai Hole’. To get caught into said ‘Pai Hole’, is to basically get stuck in Pai for an extended period of time as it’s such an incredible place.

Upon arrival to Pai, you’ll meet many other backpackers, expats and nomads that may have spent months if not years in the blissful town. So, if that’s not enough to make you wonder how incredible this location is, I don’t know what will!

Nonetheless, in terms of how long you need to stay in Pai, this can vary drastically. I believe that 5 days is an absolute minimum. However, I recommend that you try to stay for at least 1-2 weeks.

Pai is in the North West of Thailand and is quite an effort to reach. Therefore, you want to make the most out of your time to enjoy the town.

So, don’t visit Pai on a day or overnight trip, as it’s simply not enough time. There are loads of activities that you can do here, and you’ll be disappointed to not spend enough time here.

If you can, go without any expectations or upcoming plans so that you can extend your time here and enjoy it for longer! Happy Pai-holing!

Finally, if you need to find a great place to stay, I recommend checking the link below. Moreover, this includes plenty of information on a personal opinion of what I consider to be Thailand’s best hostel.

What Is the Best Way to Find and Reach the Waterfalls?

While travelling, I always swear by using Google Maps. And, you’ll notice that many other travellers use Google Maps as the most common use of directions.

For the most part, Google Maps tends to have the most reliable information including up-to-date maps, road closures and pinpoints. And, you can save your favourite locations or places that you wish to visit making it great for future travels.

Additionally, you can easily search the names of the waterfalls below to find directions straight to the locations. There will typically be plenty of reviews, recommendations and tips for visiting from previous travellers to make your life a whole load easier!

In order to reach the waterfalls, I recommend travelling via a scooter or motorbike. Moreover, this is the most budget-friendly option and ensures that you can enjoy the waterfall on your own schedule. I found the roads safe to drive on and easy to navigate while using maps.

The 4 Best Waterfalls in Pai

Without further ado, let’s dig into some of the best waterfalls in Pai. Moreover, these are some of the top attractions in Pai and are totally worth a visit. Be sure to read my tips and make use of the travel information I have provided below.

              1. Pam Bok Waterfall

Pam Bok Waterfall is one of the most popular waterfalls in Pai, and for good reason. It’s easy to reach and only requires a small fee in order to visit the location. You will need to travel along the 1095 highway and then make a right turn when seeing the signage for Pam Bok Waterfall.

The waterfall is a gorgeous stream that runs between two large rocks and falls into the large pools below. Besides, this is an excellent place for a swim on a warm day.

You will need to wander along a narrow track and wooden bridge to reach the other side of the small creek that runs from the falls. Keep in mind, this area is very slippery and care must be taken when crossing.

Not to mention, the rocks can be a little tricky to traverse. So, I don’t recommend bringing many valuables with you to this hike. Nonetheless, this is a beautifully quiet location to enjoy for an hour while relaxing in the refreshing stream or pool.

Address: Pam Bok Waterfall, Unnamed Rd Tambon Thung Yao Amphoe Pai Chang Wat Mae Hong Son 58130 Thailand Thailand

              1. Mo Paeng Waterfall

A short drive North West of Pai will land you at another crowd favourite of the waterfalls in Pai, the Mo Paeng Waterfall. Moreover, this is one of the more unique locations as it offers a large natural slide for the ultimate fun activity.

However, this waterfall only tends to flow from July to October during the rainy season. Otherwise, it tends to dry up and isn’t much of a waterfall. Nonetheless, if there has been rain around, you may get lucky at other times of the year!

Upon arrival, you will need to pay a 100 THB entry fee and then you have free roam of enjoying the waterfall. Not to mention, there is no hike to reach the falls, so you don’t need to put in much effort to reach the location.

You can climb to the top of the rocks, and there will be a section that is marked for you to take a seat. Then, you can slide down the smooth rocks and land in the pool below.

However, be mindful of your head and stay seated upright to avoid knocking yourself on the way down. Additionally, I advise coming here with a few friends for some safe afternoon fun!

Address: Mo Pang Waterfall, 99HG+G8M, Mae Na Toeng, Pai District, Mae Hong Son 58130, Thailand

              1. Mae Yen Waterfall

If you enjoy a strenuous adventure, then this one is for you. Typically, this hike will take you about 5 hours return, not including time at the waterfall. So, I advise that you head to this location in the morning so that you have plenty of daylight to enjoy the falls.

The track to the falls begins at a destination called ‘Startpoint Mae Yen Waterfall’. And, this is where you will park your scooter in order to start your journey towards the falls.

Upon your journey to the falls, you will complete multiple river crossings and the water may reach as high as your knees. So, wearing appropriate footwear and shorts is likely the best way to go.

Tip: Pack plenty of drinking water for this journey. You will need at least 2L of water per person.

Address: Startpoint Mae Yen Waterfall, 9F66+MJW, Unnamed Road, Mae Hi, Pai District, Mae Hong Son 58130, Thailand

              1. Hua Chang Waterfall

The Hua Chang waterfall in Pai is a gorgeous multi-waterfall with a large pool at the base. So, you can enjoy a refreshing dip in the water and place yourself under the stream to enjoy maximum refreshment.

Moreover, the waterfall was one of my favourite waterfalls in Pai and is much more off the beaten path. You will need to hike through the jungle for 1.5 hours each way to reach the stunning falls. And, the trail is a return track.

Furthermore, keep in mind, that you will need to do multiple river crossings, so you need to wear shoes that you are comfortable hiking in and getting wet.

Additionally, please keep an eye on the weather, as heavy rain can bring flash flooding to the area making it dangerous to complete the river crossings.

Finally, you can relax in the stream and catch rays of filtered sun through the canopy of banana trees. This waterfall offers a fantastic adventure, and is not for the faint of heart!

In order to reach this waterfall, you will need to go a little further off the beaten track, as there isn’t an actual marking on Google for the location. However, I recommend you follow this pinned location as the best way to reach the waterfall.

Upon reaching the location, you will need to start crossing the Mueang Luang River to reach the waterfall. The walk is reasonably easy, however, the jungle becomes extremely thick and directions towards the waterfall become quite confusing.

WARNING: It is extremely easy to get lost while wandering the jungle. This waterfall is extremely hidden and the tracks are difficult to follow. Do not attempt this waterfall hike alone. At the very least, you need to go with a group and tell someone that you are going.

              Additional Activities in Pai

Pai is loaded with heaps of enjoyable outdoor adventures for everyone to enjoy. So, you’ll never get caught without something to do in this charming little town.

Nonetheless, some other excellent activities to enjoy in Pai include checking out the different bars, tipsy tubing, viewpoints, Pai Canyon and walking street. Feel free to click the links to find out more about each of the activities.

              Wrapping Up

In conclusion, these four waterfalls in Pai are some of the best activities to enjoy while visiting the Mae Hong Son region. Moreover, they make for an excellent day adventure and are the perfect way to escape the humidity of Thailand.

While spending time in Pai, I recommend visiting at least two of these waterfalls to see and experience some of the beautiful jungle and landscape. It really feels like you’re stepping off the grid and deep into the jungle!
