For the most part, you will need to ensure that you’re visiting these locations during low tide, considering most of these rock pools will go underwater in high tide. Thus, use a weather app to check the local tides.

Thirdly, they offer an appreciable opportunity for beginner snorkellers. The safe and controlled environment makes them fun and easy to explore!
Things to Keep In Mind
There will likely be some sea creatures living in these rock pools. Therefore, take it slow when getting in and out of the water to avoid frightening or disturbing the critters. And, keep in mind that the high tide will bring in new seaweed, fish, and crabs. So, this means that the environment is constantly changing, which I suppose, is what makes rock pools so special!
Secondly, I would recommend wearing some water shoes to keep your feet safe as you step over the rocks; Many of the surfaces are very sharp and slippery.
The Best Time of Year to Visit Rock Pools in Melbourne
Granted, many people will want to visit these locations during the summer school holidays. However, these will also be the peak times for the vast majority of crowds to visit; Therefore, if you can hold off and wait until the school holidays have passed, I promise you’ll have a much more pleasant experience.
Nonetheless, anytime between October and early December are great times to head to these locations as the weather is just starting to warm up, and it’s still not peak time.
Otherwise, any time between February and April is some of the best warm weather periods to enjoy these rock pool locations.
The 10 Best Rock Pools in Melbourne
- Point Roadknight, Anglesea
Explore the unique rock formations and stunning rock pools over at Point Roadknight Beach. Firstly, this is a fantastic spot for families to enjoy and the safe rock pools are ideal for children.
To find this location, you will need to park your vehicle at the address written below and then walk towards the beach. Once you’ve arrived at the beach, you will need to walk towards the point of the rocks where you will find the pools. (This is on the right side of the beach)
I recommend spending at least an hour here enjoying the stunning coastline. And, if you’re lucky, you might get the chance to see small waterfalls flow into the rock pool, truly picturesque!

- Sorrento Ocean Beach, Sorrento
Next on the list is Sorrento Ocean Beach, a favourite amongst many Melburnians. Discover the plentiful rock pools and find a lovely spot to perch upon the rocks.
Additionally, have a crack at jumping off the surrounding rocks into the deep pools below. However, please be mindful of the depth and be careful in the shallow water.

If you’re the type that yearns for an adventure, this next one is for you. Set out on a short hike to reach the hidden Bridgewater Bay Rock Pool in Blairgowrie.
Firstly, park your vehicle within the Bridgewater Bay area and follow the track until you reach the stairs. Then, wander along the beach and carefully scour the rocks. I would recommend wearing protective footwear for grip and safety; Nobody likes a stubbed toe!
Finally, this location isn’t recommended for younger children. So, avoid bringing kids to this location as there is some steep rock climbing necessary to reach the pools.

Enjoy some time in the cave, explore the rock pools, and gaze at the impressive coastline. I’d recommend spending at least an hour here.
As a bonus, head north to the flat rocks dinosaur dreaming fossil site and explore the area. If you’re lucky, you may come across a dinosaur bone! This is a great experience for kids.

Next on the list is the stunning Bushrangers Bay Rock Pool. And, this has to be one of the best rock pools in Melbourne. Firstly, you will need to hike the 2.6km track to reach the beach, but it is an absolute treat and well worth the effort!
I recommend allowing a few hours to trek to the beach and enjoy plenty of time to relax near the rocks or on the beach. Besides, there’s plenty to love about this serene location.
